Sorry Jane - Houston seems to prefer Bar-B-Q's and beef ... i think your best bet is the Co-op on taft street (near montrose in the inner loop), it's open on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Also there are a few whole foods in town, and they tend to have nice salad bars. I think that may be it for the options - though I live in pittsburgh now, I live there for quite a while. There is also a market called Sandy's Market that I found out about right before I moved away, I didn't have a chance to check it out, but i hear good things. Also in Montrose you can get some nice salads at Empire Cafe, and at Cafe Brasil ... I hope you find some nice treats.

jane,
it is true that you can get some pre-made raw goodies (kookies and krackers) at the co-op on Taft Street. They also have raw agave and it is the only place in Houston (that i know of) to get raw carob (versus roasted). Also, in the coffee shop (same location) they also often carry some raw desserts (pies) and on wednesdays (and tues nights) they have a raw meal special (salad, entree and dessert).
also, field of greens (a restaurant on west alabama (just across from mission burritos and down the block from Whole Foods-Kirby)) has at least one raw dish.
other than that, there are a couple of raw potlucks in the area. at the same Taft Street Coffeehouse location, there are two monthly potlucks; one on the 2nd wednesday of the month and the other on the 4th thursday of the month. it starts around 6:30pm (ish). the other potluck that i know of is at the last organic outpost. these are held on sunday evenings. i have never been but i hear they are great. i would check their website just to make sure b/c i think they were on a brief hiatus.

hope this helps.

Has anyone been to the Taft Street Coffee house raw potlucks? I am thinking of going to one and would like to hear of other's experiences there.

no one replied...
Well, I'm going to go to the potluck tonight. Wish me luck...

Houston, we have a problem

I went...
I went to the potluck and had a GREAT time! In fact, I went again this past Wednesday and Angela Stokes and Matt Monarch were there! I had a blast and met tons of very nice and very cool people.
Some of the people from meetup.com were also there (I am assuming they were there for Matt and Angela). I felt like I was meeting celebrities! :)
Anyway, just wanted to update for anyone thinking of going...the Taft Street Coffee house potlucks are still in full effect. :)

I used to work at Taft as a barista in the coffee shop. Crazy.

It's a small world, eh? Have you been to the potlucks yet?

I haven't been to the potlucks yet either--but want to... How many people usually show up? Is there a speaker or do they usually just hang out and talk?
-
Well, Last week was different because Angela and Matt were there. Of course they spoke and sold lots of products.
Usually, though, about 20 people or so show up and they just get together and eat and fellowship. :)

By the way, I visited Pat Greer's Kitchen last week. Wonderful yummy raw dishes: entrees, desserts, snacks, etc. Yum! Everyone should check it out. I think their website is: http://patriciagreerskitchen.com/
I spent way too much, but I am never really in that area and it was worth it. Anyway, for those of you looking for a raw restaurant in Houston, check them out. :)

Sandy's is now called georgia's farm to market on I-10 between dairy ashford and kirkwood. They have a really excellent buffet lunch from 11-3. They have--
-guacamole
-gazpacho
-mint, parsley, basil
-different salad greens
-beets,jicama
-usual tomatoes, cukes,shredded carrots
-pico de gallo
-finely chopped jalapenos
-pineapple mango salsa
-apples,bananas,canteloupe,honeydew,clemetines,pine apple,papaya,oranges, grapes,strawberries
There's a chinese buffet in the clear lake area called oriental gourmet where tey have so, so many raw ingredients and romaine lettuce leaves to make wraps too. It's because they have a make your own stir fry station.
Jason's deli has an organic salad bar that rocks--even with a "raw" nut and dried fruit mix to put on your salad. You can buy guacamole or avacado there, too.
Look on www.yelp.com for some reviews of salad bars in your neighborhood. But, dont try taste of texas--people rated that one high baed on a huge chunk of self serve cheese and bread.
