Default Gimme the Scoop on Composting

I'm so grateful to finally have a living situation where I can garden. Being a raw foodist, I put out table scraps like a family of six. So, now I can practice the joys of cultivating compost!

I'm a caretaker and have to keep the compost neat looking on the property, no big heaps. Besides, that wouldn't work. All I'd be doing is making a salad for wild animals, not that I begrudge them that. That's my first question- how do I keep wild animals out of it?

I've got an extra garbage bin. What if I drill holes into it and use that as a composting bin? I'm on a tight budget.

And what about just digging holes in the ground and burying food scraps?

    Any feedback would be appreciated!
    Love, Stina

Default Yes, but follow the rules.

Yes you can bury it, but you said scraps. Just posted to T-villemom about the same question, check out -Do you have your own vegetable garden. Only uncooked vegetable matter, no fats, no grains, no animal anything; in other words, what you generate preparing veggies, don't just scrape your plate. I had a friend who just processed it in the blender with water, ( Vitamix) so it would break down quicker, no heap, she had a small nook outside the kitchen door, where she dumped her blended compost. I grew up composting, way too much info about it to post. Check out Organic Gardening Magazine at the library for the full scoop, The Complete Book of Composting, I believe was by Rodale Press. Sure there are always new ideas, but the rules of what not to put in it is is the same.

    Stina,

I used a garbage bin with holes drilled and it works fine - and the animals do sometimes get into it but it's inevitable. You don't really need to do anything - just let it be and you will have "black gold" this spring!
