Default Pomegranates - Yowzah (and not in a good way)!

So, I've been so exicted to try a pomegranate that I went all crazy at the store and bought five. Keep in mind that I've only had pomegranates in the form of very sugary juice. So, I juiced one, added some agave and just about fell over from the bitter taste. I actually chuckled at my reaction (imagine a very puckered face).

So, now I have four and I need to know what to do, so that the taste is not nearly as overpowering. I have a pineapple, apples, lemons, agave. Could someone please help me out? I tried adding some jucied apple and it did NOT help at all.

Thanks in advance for the help! :)

Do you have to juice them? They're very yummy if you eat the seeds whole. :)

I hestitated eating them because they're messy (or so I read) but I can give it a whirl.

They can be a little messy, but not too bad..usually I cut them in half and then spill the seeds out carefully into a bowl..I don't know if there's a better way to do it...enjoy! hehe

    Wow

I never eatin a pomegranate either other then bottled juice. Are the seeds the only edible part? Can't eat the skin?

Seems like such a waste of the rest of the fruit.

no the skin is not edible. but this is a patient treat. it's one that takes time. you sit down with your pom cut in half in a bowl. cover your shirt with a napkin and have another for your fingers. now gently work the seeds out of their little nests (within the pom) and munch on them.

it's such a wonderfully relaxing treat. i enjoy the time i spend tremendously! and honestly, life is worth living and if getting a little red juice on your fingers is too much... then you need a mud bath!!! LOL

I didn't watch BGVDiva's video suggestion, but if you score the pom and then separate it under water, meaning fill a deep bowl with water and submerge the pom in the water. Peel with your hands and separate. The seeds will sink and the membranes and skin will float. Skim the membranes and skin from the top. You will be left with lovely, uncrushed, juicy seeds, and a clean shirt. Enjoy!

I watched the video and it seems a shame to submerge in water and lose nutrients. I do it this way:

cut the top-not off and with a sharp knife dig out a small cone shape beneath where it was. again using the sharp knife peel back the skin all the way round as far down the fruit as you can. Make two scores down opposite sides of the fruit where a membrane runs and then break in half. Each segment of seeds should then come away easily and you won't have to suffer any of the bitter skin or membrane. It is a very quick and yet calming way to eat a pom :)

thanks for the link BGVDiva. I usually take the messy approach...ends up looking like I fingerpainted, but fun!

    Bitter? They shouldn't be bitter.

I had a nice one the other day. The juicy parts were beautiful and red. It was positively sweet! I ate it with sliced strawberries, and it was almost too much... like eating candy.

The pomegranate I had before that one, though, had very pale fruit around the seeds (almost transparent, with just a little bit of pink). It was more tasteless than anything (and slightly bitter, due to the seeds, I guess).

A good, ripe pomegranate should taste delicious!

Oh... that sounds really good! I wish I could find some blood oranges. I haven't seen any in ages, though.

Maybe it just wasn't ripe enough because the juice was positively awful. I'll give it another whirl.
