    Default Confused about Buckwheat

So, I'm eating a bowl of buckwheat sprout porridge, which isn't all that great.... But I'm confused. I've read that buckwheat is a fruit. Are the groats a seed of that fruit? What exactly am I eating when I eat buckwheat sprouts? I enthusiastically bought 25 pounds of it!

I can't imagine buying 25 pounds of anything besides perhaps potting soil!

I like to substitute with sprouted buckwheat instead of barley for Alissa's Chili recipe. It's awesome and it so filling especially after I've done some gruelling running or cycling. xoxo

Freebird, that's a great idea. thanks I am going to try that.

I use soaked, sprouted and dried buckwheat as a cereal.

just make up some nutmilk to pour on it and slice up some apples and banannas, yum. Could easily eat 25 pounds of that.

    Lightbulb Buckwheat

Hey, I use sprouted buckwheat in vegi smoothies, hoping to add some carbs. It seems to be more filling.

Just bumping up in case anyone knows what sprouted buckwheat is exactly. A sprouted seed? or a mini-fruit- that doesn't make sense though doesn't it. And why am I even wondering......... must categorize!

    Default buckwheat

I always considered buckwheat a basic grain. mkz

Though it is usually thought of as a grain, buckwheat is actually the seed of a broadleaf plant related to rhubarb. While it is not a true grain, it is used like one in cooking, and it surpasses rice, wheat and corn on almost every measure of healthfulness (including the fact that rice, wheat, and corn are high on the glycemic scale, thus provoking a quick spike in blood sugar levels, a proven promoter of systemic inflammation). Buckwheat, on the other hand, ranks low on the glycemic scale.

I adore buckwheat. I make buckwheaties ALL the time. Delicious.

Just soak, pulse (don't break the grains!) in a FP with agave or bananas with some salt and cinnamon, and then spread and dehydrate.
