Default Good for you NOT for dogs

Some food good for you but not your dogs.

RAISINS, GRAPES, can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and kidney failure.

CHOCOLATE can be toxic to dogs and birds. as little as 1/4 ounce can cause excitment, increased urination, muscle tremors, seizures, and rapid heart rate.

SUGARLESS GUM and CANDIES anything containing xylitol, can cause a rapid drop in blood sugar

ONIONS one small onions can be fatal. a chemical in onions damages dogs blood cells.

MACADAMIA NUTS a compound in them may leave your dog with temporary paralysis.

ADVACADOS will cause death in birds

Thank you SO much. Do you know if avocados are only fatal to birds, or are they bad for dogs as well?

Advacados were not mention as hamful to dogs but i don't know for sure and don't feed them to my dogs. What my dogs get each day:

Costo brand dog food for older dogs
    1 banana
    2 to 4 large carrotts
    1 lg apple
    1 lg handful of almonds
2 capsules of black currant oil
romaine leaves at least 2 lg each

My vet who sees my dogs 1 time a year for a check up is always amazed at them. They act and seem much younger than they are, there coats are full, shiny and soft as a cats, they are playful, full of energy, and their eyes sparkle. My 2 big guys run out in the yard and play hard till they drop then rest and get up to play more. No one limps, no sore muscles, lots of energy. If I forget the black currant oil or run out for a while my oldest will start favoring one of his legs but as soon as I get him back on the oil it goes away, so I try t o be faithful in giving it to them.

I just looked it up on ASPCA's website...read on for whatever type of pet you may have...

I know there are (hispanic) back yard breeders (BYBs) who believe feeding garlic and onion to dogs is a naturaly remedy to get rid of fleas and ticks, but that is sooooooooooo not true!!! It's actually more harmful to the dog.

Default Items Not Good for Dogs

My holistic vet tells me that garlic is the number one antioxidant for dogs. As with all things, moderation is the key! I did not know about macadamia nuts! Thanks for that info. I gave my dog avocado all the time (small, small amount) without problem. I understand now it's the amount of fat they cannot digest. Used to feed her raisins all the time when she was young, now we find out it can kill dogs. Go figure.

I used to do the same with Zeus. I'd throw grapes at him and he'd catch them. But then he'd throw them up so I naturally stopped giving them to him. I've heard the same as you about avocado, garlic, and onion --> in moderation.

But they really don't eat that when they're in the wild.

We used to feed our dog grapes as well. We had a grapevine that grew along the back fence (it's long since stopped producing fruit). Considering the fact that our dog only weighed 10 pounds, I'm surprised we didn't kill her with all those grapes!

When we were in Kenya, we had an avocado tree in the backyard. The dogs used to love those. They would eat the ones that fell on the ground.

A co workers dog was given some macadamia nuts over the holiday and is now at the vets for ovservation. They say he will be o'k but she is having him stay at the vets today and tommorow. He's just dragging around his hind end, can't move his legs, pretty sick dog.

Diali36 - is there a reason you chose those particular foods to feed your pet daily? I've not fed my dog anything from the do-not-feed list, other than grapes, which he loves...he only gets the ones that roll off the counter and onto the ground. (He gets to them before I can!) He does, however, suffer from terrible flea allergies. It only takes one flea bite and this year it has been the worst ever in the 9 years we've had him.

I think this gives them a good vitamin, mineral, spread. also low calorie snacks they like to chew like the carrots and apples, the almonds for their eyes, skin, coat, general well being, black currant oil for their joints and also helps with skin, coat, blood pressure, lung function, (I found out about Black Currant Oil from Dr. Weil, started taking it for myself and then one of my older dogs started favoring one of his legs thought of giving it to him, he no longers limps at all even after playing hard). I give the oil to all my dogs now it comes in capsule form and they just eat them.
The romaine is a nice dark leafy green I just feel they need in their diet.
The Costco brand dog food is very well made, my Vet had told me it is the same or better than most high end foods.

I've been feeding my dog Nutro since he was a puppy. His coat is not like any other dogs' coat I've felt. It's very soft (always has been), except every year when the fleas come out, if he gets bit even once, he attacks his back end and bites off all the hair he can reach! It's so sad, really. I'll check into the Costco brand to see how it compares.
