    Default Sprouting Buckwheat

I soaked 2 cups of buckwheat per the Directions in LOLF. I am going to sprout it for about 24 hrs to make the calzone recipe. I don't have a jar big enough for all of the buckwheat so i put it in a mesh collander and covered the top with a plate.

Will it sprout ok in the collander? I have always used jars.

    Thanks

I answered my own question. I woke up this morning and I have tiny little tails. They seem to be sprouting fine.

They actually sprouted great. They were easy to rinse and didn't get too slimey. I have been sprouting them in the colander ever since.

    Default Question

Since you were successful at sprouting buckwheat....I have a question. I sprouted buckwheat to use in one of Alyssa's recipes (I think it was porridge) They sprouted nicely but am I supposed to use the hull in the recipe (I think the hard coating is the hull) or just the sprouts?

Also, I am going to sprout wheat berries for the first time...are they easy?

    Thanks!

I sprouted buckwheat groats. I believe they are unhulled. I know there is another type of buckwheat used for buckwheat greens. Those shouldn't be used in the recipe. If you are using the sprouted buckwheat groats, use the whole thing (groat and sprout) in your recipe. The sprouts on mine were very small, not quite as long as the groat.

I have had good luck sprouting wheatberries. I did it in a large jar with a mesh screen. Make sure you leave a good amount of room in the jar for the sprouts to grow. One time I sprouted too many and they grew a little bit of mold. I think it was b/c they were too cramped to rinse and air out properly.

Disclaimer - I am by now means an expert on sprouting...just speaking from personal experience.

don't sprout for too long or they get bitter. I found out the hard way and thought it was just how buckwheat was. Then I read somewhere that it gets bitter from sprouting too long. Now I put it in everything. I love it. I like how it gets crunchy after dehydrating. makes for great granola.

I soak buckwheat, or sprout, and make Buckwheat Crispies (modified Sarma's Recipe for Raw Food and Wine to eliminate non raw Maple Syrup) for Cereal. They are awesome for cereals and granola's. I love them with strawberry pieces. ;)

Default Where to buy buckwheat groats

I'm having trouble finding/buying raw buckwheat groats in the Boston area. I've tried Whole Foods and Wild Oats with no luck. Can anyone recommend somewhere or a reliable website to buy from?

    Thanks

    Default Also looking for buckwheat

I want to make the burger buns that are on page 330 of "Living on Live Food". Alissa states to use raw buckwheat and NOT to use whole buckwheat groats. I have searched and searched for raw buckwheat berries to no avail. I e-mailed Alissa's team and will post when I get a reply. In the meantime, if anyone knows where I can order raw, organic buckwheat I would love to have that info. Thanks!

Default Another source for buckwheat groats

i found a place online: www.organicfruitsandnuts.com which sells raw buckwheat groats for much cheaper than The Sprout People - I don't know anything about the company (in CA) and haven't ordered from them, but they have an extensive offering on their website.

    Default Raw Buckwheat Groats

I got a response from Alissa's team. Kim said to use raw, organic buckwheat groats. There are quite a few on-line companies that sell them. This one has them and also has many other raw, organic grains, beans and spices:

They even guarantee that their beans will sprout!

I have not ordered from them yet, but I am about to.
