Non-vegan Soap
I would please like all of your opinions on this.;)
DH knows how I love healthy, chemical free cosmetics, lotions, ect. SO, back from his travels to CA last summer, he bought me a gift of some unscented, natural soap and wrapped it up so prettily and presented it to me in a box with flowers. Sweetie! Anyways, I read the soaps' ingredients and it says:
La Purisima Mission Soap. The only two ingredients in this soap are tallow (pardon me, but it's cow fat, ) and lye. That's it. Pure and simple soap it says.
Here's my quandry. I won't use it and it's sitting there on the shelf untouched. I notice my DH looking at it and I'm afraid of hurting his feelings to tell him,
"I won't use beef fat on my fat, thank you very much!" and I KNOW for a fact he put alot of thought in this gift that has been sitting there for months now, un touched.
I thought of throwing it away, sorta outta sight, ottta mind sorta thing...but just couldn't throw his soap away. Then, I thought of just letting it sit in the shower and dissolve slowy as though i am using it, but he will notice I'm not taking good care of it by not putting it away from the water!
Anyone, Please?

I can't imagine that a man who would be so thoughtful to give you such a sweet gift to begin with wouldn't understand your honesty if you told him what your concern is. Just be sweet and honest...tell him how much you appreciated the love behind his gift and that you don't want to make light of it but you are choosing not to use those ingredients on your skin anymore, does he have any ideas so that such a beautiful present doesn't go to waste????

Thank you, glimr.
I Know.....I thought of that, too. I guess I just don't want to hurt his feelings or something....It just seems unsweet of me to tell him I won't use it, and it's just because of the fact that he IS so sweet, that I don't want to tell him, ya see?
I know he would understand that's not the question, oh, well, it's just such a confusing mess..... It is a pure soap, but not my kind of pure.
Maybe I could tell him, " honey, thank you for the tallow soap, but I really don't want to put animal fat on my skin, ect.
It just sounds so heartless or someting, ya know?

does he know there is animal fat in it?

Yes. In fact, he was proudly explaining to me how it was made, and how it was made in the olden days just the same way, with only two ingredients, ect.

He's your husband, though. Shouldn't 1. you be able to be honest with him, and 2. he know you're vegan (i'm assuming) and don't want to use, eat, or support animal products or animal cruelty?

I am not an animal rights activist. I wear leather, use honey, ect. However, I don't use animal tallow on my skin.
Thats where I draw the line.
I am not being dishonest by keeping my mouth shut. I want to be careful how I word it, ya know what I mean? I am simply asking for advice on how to say it nicely, because he gets his feelings hurt and is very sensitive
Maybe I'll just say I want to keep it forever. Once I use it, it's gone.
Does that sound O,K?

I'm not an animal rights activist, either. Animal rights and veganism aren't synonymous. :)
My mistake, glad i said "I assume"
Hmm... in that case, just tell him you think it was really sweet of him to think of you, but you're uncomfortable using animal fat to cleanse your body. Or just use it as one of those decorative things in your bathroom. Lots of people have those cute little soap baskets or whatever. Or even better, use it for guests.

Brilliant!! YES!! I will put the soap in a huge sea shell with some other littler soaps, maybe sea shell types. Hey! That's and idea... then I can display it somewhere in the bathroom! HE HEE
Thanks for the tip.

My husband once got me this huge basket filled with all sorts of vanilla scented things. I hate the scent of vanilla. I like real vanilla. The kind that you eat. But I don't like vanilla scented products. And most of what was in the basket was not stuff I would use anyway. Like powder and lotion. I kept the basket. Put it on display in my kitchen, above my cabinets. Gave the rest of the stuff away. He never noticed.
I know when he saw it he probably though... Ah bath stuff! She likes bath stuff. So he bought it without looking any further.
Truth is, I too am very picky as to what I put on my body. I have a lot of skin conditions and I have to be careful. I rarely use soap on my body. I will if I've been out gardening, worked up a sweat or got really dirty or something. Mainly just use it on my hands. I use some that is handmade of coconut oil and lavender.

re-gifting sometimes works if you can phrase it right.
