    Default Exercise in General

As we age exercise habits may not be the same as when younger. What do you do for exercise, and why.

I really like walking. It is so humid and hot in Ky now that is a problem. In the winter, it is so cold, wet, etc., that is a problem. I hate the treadmill. I got too hot one day this week and am now scared off walking for a while. What does one do . . . and how much and how often.

I walk most days for half an hour or so. When to weather is too cold, hot, or wet outside I actually walk inside, from room to room, following a little route, and entertaining the cat. I also do yoga almost every day for awhile. It makes me feel really good when I stick to it. I'm 58.

Why is it a problem to walk when it's hot or cold or wet?

I love to walk and am about a15 minute walk from the beach here in N. Florida. I don't walk in the summer because the heat and humidity is brutal and I feel sick when out in it and excersizing. Even at 6a.m. or 8 pm. I personally can't take that kind of heat without wanting to throw up or pass out. I have a rebounder and a recumbent bike.also walking and yoga tapes for then.

I've just started a yoga class. Went through 3 teachers before finding one I like. Two others have been recommended as well but I've not found the time to try them out.

I also walk, a lot. Early a.m.'s and evenings when He's home and also to and from class.

I have a rebounder, hula hoop, Indian Clubs, medicine balls, kettlebell, sand bags, badminton set and various tapes I listen to at various times. Sometimes we'll walk to the park around and back. Other times we'll drive and bring all the equipment and play with some of that depending on how we're feeling.

I am almost 50, 48 to be exact. In the summer, I go to the gym twice a week to lift weights. First workout is squats, snatches and deadlifts. Second workout is all olympic style lifting. On the weekends, lots of yard work. During the winter, I do two days of stretching at home, plus a 3rd day at the gym, which includes more strong man type stuff, like farmers walks, sand bag work, kettle bells, tire flips, etc.

I have been trying to get into a routine type workout lately and just don't have enough hours in the day to fit it in. Between my five acres of maintaining (mowing, weeding, harvesting, etc.), working 8 hours a day, taking care of the house, dogs, birds, etc. I run out of time. (flimsy excuse, eh?)

BUT I have watched little kids lately. They are constantly moving. Whether it's wiggling in their seats or running or stretching or whatever - they are constantly moving. So, I've started moving. At work, standing to do a task instead of sitting. Taking stairs (have been doing this for years) instead of the elevator (I park on the 6th floor of the parking garage, so I go down in the a.m. after parking, go up at lunch, back down after lunch, and then back up after work). I counted and it's like 700 some steps from my car to my desk so that times four is what? 2800 some steps? Not counting all the walking at work, back and forth from the copier, etc. If I am sitting, I'm wiggling. Doing heinie crunches or leg lifts or some type of movement. Stretching backwards. Arm stretches. While I'm at the copier I stretch or shift from leg to leg.

I just feel I need to move it - keep it busy (it being the body)

Now when winter sets in and I'm not outside doing as much I will get back into a more reigid routine. I really like Kenpo, which is a martial arts routine. I also like the Biggest Loser workout, pilates, t-tapp, weight-lifting, bike training, playing Wii sports (bowling, tennis), and I like to vary these routines. I feel if I do one type of workout too for too long, I get burnt out.

That sounds like a workout in and of itself!

gosh, that reminds me.. There is a really good excercise program called

    10,000 steps..

all you need to do is attach a step counter to your belt in the morning.
and it just counts the steps throughout the day..
you try to average 10,000 steps a day, which is not that simple.,

it is a real help, tho, because i used to just be busy during the day running around; then, in the evening , when i looked at my step counter and saw that i needed 1,000 more steps or so, i would jump on the rebounder and come up to my quota.

somethiing is telling me( my conscience) that i should resume this routine.
i really felt good when i did it.. and it is so simple.!

The people who have really gone into the details of this program have figured out all the details as to how much good this does the body..

as one forum of excercise for people who are just on the go constantly and hardly get time to do an 'official routine' for periods in their life.

i know i have done this whe i was in circumstances like yours, smilingrawdancer, and i never regretted it.

If nothing else, it makes you feel that you really ARE helping your body.
It reminds me of vegan's post the one before yours, smiling raw.
where she mentions the kids and the fact that they are always moving.

    we can too.!

i think perhaps most of us at a forum such as this one,
(unless we are dedicated couch potatoes )at least try to do some good for our bodies, physically, excercise-wise, because our consciences whisper to us when we do not.!

You go girl! This is amazing. I wish I worked somewhere far and unreachable in order to make it challenging physically for me to get there. You're gettin' your WHOLE body workin' all day! this is great!

I walk to work... and luuuvv running!

Raw Orchid, the 10,000 steps program is a really simple way to , at the end of the day, look and say to ourselves: " say, i really DID keep moving today.!" I may not have realised it because i was so busy.."
10,000 steps is nothing to sneeze at.

anyone want to take a 10,000 steps challenge?

    it is really cool.

I don't do much exercise but I have a physically demanding job and I'm on my feet all day long. I've noticed a lot less muscle mass on raw. I lost so much weight on raw that I got scared. I'm better at doing a variety of recipes now, and I've gained some weight back, but I'm still very skinny. I don't know how to keep the weight on. I was skinny before raw and I lost about 30lbs the first 4 months. I'm 5'10" so I looked like a scarecrow.
