They serve different purposes. Do you NEED a juicer? Absolutely not! Question would be, do you want one?

V-M touts that their machine makes juice. Well, not really. It processes whatever is put in it leaving in the fiber. A juicer separates the juice from the fiber. IF you want juice and don't want to purchase a juicer you could strain whatever you put in the V-M but then, what would be the point (unless you're dealing with an illness and need an extra amount of nutrients in a hurry). Fiber is necessary for optimum health.

I have a juicer and a Vitamix, and I NEVER use the juicer anymore!!!

If I want juice, I much prefer it to be made in the vitamix and have all the fiber and other parts that the juicer would remove with the pulp.

I think the Vitamix is a brilliant juicer, works great for me!

On rare occasion I would think if a recipe calls for juice from the juicer, or even one of those icky juicer pulp recipes, you might use a juicer, but really, the VM works for me, and the juicer hasn't been out of the cupboard since.

I use my juicer for making juices sometimes (though I like the Vitamix better because then I don't have to find another use for the pulp!), but what I really find the juicer useful for is homogenizing nuts or sprouted beans. You can get a smoother texture than with a food processor (at least, better than MY cheap fp will do). I wouldn't buy a juicer solely for the nuts, though.

Just a suggestion. . . If you want to use the Vitamix for making pulp-free juice, try pouring it through a paint strainer bag (or nut milk bag). I've never done it this way so I'm not sure the mesh is fine enough to strain all the juice pulp, but they work really well for squeezing out the nut milk from the pulp.
