Look at the "fur" closely -- it might be roots.

I did...Definately fur.
This is a very newbie wheatgrass grower thing to say but, I looked underneath the soil and I was amazed at how much they grew in just a day and a hlaf!!! WOW. (can you tell I have never grown anything b4)
Hehehe

Don't worry....
The fur can be just rinsed away. Sometimes, if there is not enough air circulation under and through the tray, that will develop. I have some in my house right now with the exact same thing. No biggy. Rinse it away. Make sure the water drains through and that the tray is not flat on a surface. Are there holes in the bottom of your tray? It will still grow to a fine tray of wheatgrass. Another reason is you may have sprouted then too long. Or they were dry for too long during some point of the sprouting part. Mist in the evening and water in the morning. Keep out of direct sunlight. Hope this helps....
I'd rather juice my grass!

Yes I have the trays with the holes. I am not sure how you mean by not putting it on a flat surface??
I followed the instructions given with my kit rather than my WG book. It said to just soak the seeds for 8 hours and then I can plant them. I think I made a mistake and soaked them a couple of hours longer than it said.
erm....I think I have just wasted it like a silly person. Someone said to me (not from here) if it has fur I cant use it. So I could have just rinsed it away??? Ok, I am about to start it again!!
I'll live and learn

grass
AFter you've soaked it for 8-12 hours, you sprout it for two days. Rinsing thoroughly 2-3 times a day. Sprout with a sprout bag or in a glass jar. The water, when rinsing, must run through the sprouts. When you start to see the tail, place on top of your soil, and cover for two days with another tray or with newspaper. If the tray is on a flat surface, it doesn't have airflow underneath. I have special racks for growing, but you can place it on another tray, so that it is lifted off the surface. Hard to explain, just don't suffocate the holes underneath. Let me know.

One more thing....you are just placing the seed on top of the dirt, right? Not actually planting it in the soil? Don't be afraid to layer the seed on....

Oh Rawmom, you're a life saver!
Thanks for the info. No, I wasn't actually planting them. It said to mix the spelt seeds with the soil.
One thing is that there are A LOT of seeds in one of the packets and it said to use them ALL for one tray. It is a 500g back which is about 17 oz.
I have a some of those cooling racks that my family use to put cakes on to cool down. I think that should be ok :)

Glad it is getting easier to think about for you. I use about 1 1/2 cups of dry seed for a 10 X 10 tray. So it is really thick when I layer it on. Sounds good to use the cooling racks. Remember a light mist in the evening and water in the morning. If all else fails, you will be able to order wheatgrass from me directly soon.

Sorry, didn't see your other comment. I put the dirt down, thin layer and then lay the seed right on top. Do not mix it with the dirt or cover it with dirt. The newspaper on top or another tray on top, symbolizes the layer of dirt covering the seed. That's the way I do it.

Lol, that's cool! Are you in London?
I'll become a wheatgrass growing expert if it kills me! hehehe
So I don't have to put soil ontop of the seeds?
(Its so strange I am asking all these questions...I mean I have Anne Wigmores book and everything else!)
I'll remember the light mist and then the watering!
Thank you thank you!!!!!

Not in London, but my daughter would love it if I was! No you do not need to put dirt on seed. There is a picture in Ann's book somewhere. She grew it on cafeteria trays. Have fun!!

I will! I'll call on you if I have any difficulties...

Ok so my second attempt seems to be more successful. After leaving them in the dark for a couple of days they are a good three inches.
There are still some white fur on the base in some places though.
