My neighbor seems to have great success growing them. The key seems to be neglect.

Infuriatingly, they seem to thrive along roadsides, which is exactly where they're too polluted to be edible. I'm guessing the cars efficiently spread the airborne seeds.

It might even be possible that they thrive on some element of the exhaust fumes, though I hesitate to give this too much credence.

It's partly relatively poor soil, partly neglect since roadsides are rarely mown these days and warmth from the traffic which gives them a good start in the spring I think.

Two herbals for liver cleansing are bepleuram ( a root I think) , and chaparrall tea (high saponin with creosote).

    Try milk thistle!

Thumbs-up to belleadonna for mentioning celery.

I find it interesting that celery is mentioned frequently for it's diuretic benefits for the kidneys, but is so rarely mentioned for its effects upon the liver & gallbladder. These latter effects I discovered for myself, rather than reading about them (since they are so rarely mentioned). I have found celery juice very effective for stimulating bile release - so much so, I can actually feel it. I have also experienced the same effects from alcohol-tinctured celery seed.

If anyone reading this has the inclination to try a decent-quality alcoholic tincture of celery seed and milk thistle (also including some chanca piedra), Herbpharm's 'Stonebreaker' tincture should fit the bill.

It also keeps hair its natural color, protect the DNA, and aids the metabolism of estrogen and estrogen by products through the liver. For the kidney in addition to the cabbage juice, a good juice is watermelon juice. If you are having frequent urinary tract infections or bladder infections then cranberry or all blueberry juice is the answer. I have this in the evening with a small one ounce of mineral water.

I randomly happened upon this thread again, and, browsing through it, noticed the above (quoted) reply. Unfortunately, it's from 2007, and the person who posted it appears to have never posted here on RFT again. Still, it's worth responding to it in case anyone else finds themselves in a similar situation and happens to unearth this thread in their search for information.

Both kidney and liver disease were mentioned by 'Danevas'. The first thing that occurred to me in relation to this is that one should check for certain heavy metals known to be problematic for both of these organs. Cadmium and Lead, in particular, and also other suspects such as Mercury et al. One of the best authorities on the topic of heavy metal intoxication is Cutler.

Fenugreek sprout juice is simply amazing for the liver/. 16 oz a day took six weeks to do major repair to my liver and bring it back to a level of health when l was young. l've had a bad liver since my teens, but 6 weeks of fenugreek sprout juice fixed it brilliantly, improved my digestion out of site and helped fix a leaky gut! l feel like a brand new man, and yes, green smoothies NEVER could repair the body in the way that FRESH green sprout juices have done.

There are plenty of great drinks for the liver, but fenugreek sprout juice is one of the stars. As good as it gets.

the local paddock also has them...fresh, super potent and free. Weeds are excellent food...can't say enough about them. Weed juice for a twice weekly tonic, or weed sprout juice for daily juice...gotta watch the ole oxalic acid in the adult plants, could be tricky for various folks, that's why sprouted weeds are better imo, + far more nutritious.

lt's good to get the weeds that make you feel like a fire breathing dragon afterwards, but those weeds tend to be wild weeds. Farm weeds are not near so potent in my experience.

I doubt it, but I think you're close. It hinges on what Mystic said below:

    It's partly relatively poor soil
Bingo! Weeds don't just pop up randomly, one of their main jobs is to keep the soil healthy. Depending on the elements missing from the soil (or an excess of harmful elements), different weeds will appear and thrive, which have the ability to rectify the specific problem. Farmers have had miracles happen by letting plots of poor soil go to the weeds for a few years; afterwards they are very rich and fertile. The popular view on weeds is a very narrow-minded one. An interesting book on the subject is 'Weeds - Guardians of the Soil'.

I think it likely that the dandelions can perhaps detoxify some of the harmful elements present in car exhaust, and that's why they seem to be everywhere along the roadsides.
