Easy Recipes/advice For Newbie?
I just sent away for one of those hand-cranked juicers from Revvell. When it gets here I'm hoping to change my rather poor eating habits. I've read a lot of good things about juicing and it seems to be the way to go.
I was afraid to start out with an electric juicer. I didn't want to sink a lot of money into this project until I was sure I would stick with it.
A manual juicer will get the job done just like an electric, only slower, right? I hope so.
What mixes would you more experienced folks recommend I start with? I live by myself, so I don't want to keep a large amount of perishables on hand in case I can't consume it before it goes bad.
I'll be watching this board every day for suggestions and advice. Thanks.

If you are not used to vegetable juice, I think a carrot apple celery combination would be good. You can add juice from greens to that combo in amounts that still taste good to you. The carrot and apple are sweet and the celery adds a bit of saltiness to the mix. All are good at cutting the bitterness of some green juices.
I am interested to know how you like the manual juicer. I have been eyeing it for a while now. I have a centrifugal juicer at the moment that doesn't juice greens very well.

KellyL-thanks. Please excuse my ignorance, but do I peel the apples and carrots, or just ram them in? I'm an absolute beginner and don't have a clue. I'll let you know what I think of the manual juicer after I've experimented with it.
Until it arrives, I'll be studying past threads, FAQ's, and archives for all pertinent juicing information.

Hey, I don't bother to peel 'em, just ram in with brute force! And don't even bother to core the apple. I love juicing. My body does thrives on liquid nutrition. I do labor for a living-housecleaning- and juice twice a day and eat one meal a day plus an evening dessert and feel great doing Raw. After a lifetime of being lethargic....... Hey do you have Alissa's book? Seriously, it's the number one book I'd recommend and I've read probably 20 books on raw eating. Keep an eye out for juicers at thrift stores; you can pick one up cheap; it's worth the investment. And no matter what, don't give up!

Hey Brute, where did you order your hand-cranked one? I don't know about you guys, but I peel them if they are not organic (which my budget currently doesn't allow me to enjoy a lot of organic things..can't wait until next month)

Brute - I do what lavendarJ said regarding peeling veggies. If they are organic, I don't peel them. I peel the conventional veggies. It is pretty easy to find reasonably priced organic carrots around here but the organic apples are too expensive for me.
Also, since watermelons are in season, I like to make a fast watermelon smoothie. Just blend chunks of watermelon in your blender until smooth and drink. Sweet and delicious.

Juicers
Hi,
I'm totally new too. I just read that a Mastication type juicer is better than a centrifugal juicer. It has something to do with how the juicer crushes the fruits and veggies and how we, in turn, digest it. Something to look into. :-)
-
Hi, just checking to see if you had a chance to use your juicer yet. If it has arrived, ofcourse.
-
No Kelly, no juicer yet. I paid with a personal check and things take a little longer that way. I'm sort of a low-tech guy. I've never had a credit card, don't have a clue how PayPal works, and only opened my first checking account and learned how to write checks last year! I've always been happy with my minimalist lifestyle, but lately my life has become more complicated.
As soon as I start juicing, I'll post the results.

Ok, thanks! I am anxious to hear about it :)

Two words:
Green smoothies

When my perishables get a little dated I just put them through the juicer and go to the store for more produce

Veganforlife - I don't like green smoothies. I have tried to make many kinds and all are a struggle to get down. I have Green for Life and understand why they are so good for you. I just don't like them. Maybe one day I will. I do like green juice so I will have to get more greens that way for now. :)

Okay KellyL, I finally got my manual juicer. I found it on my front porch AFTER I got back from grocery shopping in town! Grrr! I live out in the boonies and usually only get to town once or twice a week. Now I gotta go back for some stuff to run through the juicer because I don't have any fresh fruits or greens on hand.
This thing is made of see-through plastic and I sure hope it's tougher than it looks. It'll probably be alright if I don't abuse it.
They also sent a nice DVD with assembly and wheatgrass growing instructions.
I'll try juicing something tomorrow and report in.
