Hello! I am about to start oil pulling! Dh and I. We are excited!

I want to use either sunflower or sesame oil.

At our store I only found one option though.
Organic unrefined expeller pressed sesame oil.

    Is that okay?

I know that on oilpulling.com it says to get either cold pressed or refined. Well...this is neither. But it's all I can get here in Alaska. Will it work?

Why does it need to be either cold pressed or refined only?

I read the oilpulling website, but I'm still confused. Does oil pulling give any other benefits besides in the mouth? How does it actually help dried skin? I'm assuming the oil is absorbed through the mouth tissues. How does it actually release toxins? I couldnt find a detailed explaination with medical terminology.

And why does the Dr. on the website say something about living 150 years by oil pulling when all this does it whiten teeth?

    Please explain!

jrose... that's what I use, and it works great.
blix... Sounds smart! If it's not working, move on to something that does work for you! ;)
apower... I can't remember what the oil pulling site says, but I have been oil pulling somewhat faithfully for several months. The benefits I've had that I can think of off the top of my head: improved skin on my face, softer feet, super white teeth, very clean feeling mouth/teeth during the day, better gums, phlegm released. Because this somehow helps to pull whatever mucous I have up and out, I breath more deeply and have no blockage. Ever.

I can't say for sure how much of this is raw food and how much is oil pulling, but I can tell you that I detox a bit when I oil pull after I haven't in a few days. I actually feel muuuuuch better when I'm doing it regularly as well. :)

I have been off my prescription allergy medicine for over 2 weeks. I wake up congested, sometimes with sinus pain (as I always have) but then I do the oil pulling and it all goes away with no fuss. No more 3 hours of mad phlegm and snot and congestion until the Singulair kicked in. I was raw for about 6 weeks before starting the oil pulling, and didn't notice any difference in my allergies. I am going to keep doing it. I have worked it into my morning routine with ease. It took 2 weeks before I came off the medicine (ran out, didn't refill). So I've been doing it about a month I think.
I'm sure it is a combination of raw and oil pulling - one supports the other. My mom thinks it is the swishing motion clearing my sinuses. But why would I not be bothered by allergies for the rest of the day? It's very interesting, I think.

I wonder if the type of oil used is important. I have been using rape seed oil. Any suggestions??

blix - we were using coconut oil, but I was concerned because it wasn't listed on oilpulling.com - have you read there? They only suggest 2 kinds - sesame or sunflower. Sometimes the Google ads that pop up in between the paragraphs for other oils are confusing.
Now we have just been using sunflower oil. it doesn't taste as yummy as the coconut, but at least it is less expensive and recommended.
    good luck--

rape seed oil is also known as canola oil.

avoid that stuff like it's the flu!

Canola oil is an industrial by-product not meant for human consumption.

Blix... That makes total sense!!! I can tell you that I even tried oil pulling with toasted sesame oil... Not only did it gross me out, but nothing happened! It might be worth another try with expeller-pressed or cold-pressed sesame oil. :)

Great! Now I know what I was doing wrong. It can't have been that everyone else was wrong. I'll get the right oil after the new year holiday and start again. The rape seed oil I use is straight from the seed, but I will look into it. Thanks every one.:)

Natural rapeseed oil contains erucic acid, which is mildly toxic to humans in large doses but is used as a food additive in smaller doses

yes but didn't she say she's using rape seed oil, not canola?

The high praise for canola is propaganda put forth by the Canadian government because canola, the genetically engineered form of rapeseed oil...
    taken from your link

not that i'm agreeing with anyone using rapeseed for oil pulling...

What I have decided to do is...I bought some disgusting flax seed oil to make the coconut butter and it made it taste horrible. I got some decent stuff in and now I will use the sharp flax seed oil for oil pulling.
