Anyone going to Burning Man?
I'm a first timer and I heard they have a raw chef there supplying fresh food for all who want it...
Looking forward to it!

I honestly have no idea what the appeal is of this event. I looked into it when a former potential "boss" invited me to go and I had never heard of it, and it seems really juvenile and actually just repressive, like how when women with low self-esteem become strippers and it "appears" confident and "strong" on the surface but it's really usually just them acting out their abuse, as they will usually admit later after coming to the conclusion that they can just "be" and don't have to act out to prove anything, etc. It's sad to me that people are so repressed they can't just be themselves and instead have to go out in the middle of nowhere to meet and be utterly ridiculous. I'm NOT suggesting people who want to go are abused, though. I wouldn't insult either of you like that. But to each their own. So have a good time! There are certainly worse gatherings - lol!

Burning Man scares me too (even though I know all about it LOL). I just think it would be way too intense for me. I have heard a number of stories of people wigging out while they're out there. That said, lots of my friends here in SF are way into it and have gone repeatedly for many years. I guess it is whatever you choose to make of it. Have fun though!

Wow...interesting replies here. LOL...well, I have 2 close friends going and they have gone before and said it was the most amazing experience. I"m not into the nudity or anything but they said that everyone performs amazing acts of love and kindness the whole time and basically shares/barters everything. I was told to bring NO FOOD that I will be fed there (even raw!). I've also heard that the performances, music and art are out of this world....I'm looking forward to the adventure!

Here's the Official Site
http://www.burningman.com/
Get your car checked out, even if you run to Jiffylube in RenoBRING WATER, Bring Too much Water, store it in your car.
It's a long stretch of lonely hwy please take rest stops, more people die on NV hwys from falling asleep. Watch for wildlife entering the hwy( Prong Horn & Mule Deer ) The last time I was in Gerlach the speed limit was 75 and traffice was doing an average of 90 so things come at you fast.
Also stop in a store at Gerlach & buy a knick knack, that small mining town's median income is like $30k so support the town a lil' Everyone always gets something in RENO.
Be safe & have fun

My first time every hearing or knowing of "Burning Man" was from an TV episode of "Malcom in the middle" . It was pretty wild and free from what i seen, but i am sure there is more to this event then in a 1/2 hour tv program can portray. :)
Have fun.

It doesn't scare me, I just think events like these don't promote self-expression as much as they focus on the repression these people feel. It's not pro-active, it's REactive, so it's not really "building" anything.
Oregon has a "country fair" that is a poor excuse to drop acid in the woods, get naked in the woods and paint your boobs in flowers and run around topless while all the people come from all over (some bring their families during the day) and the hippies at the top make a landslide of money off such "all-loving" events. It's a carnival, and all the guys in town and around laugh and snicker at the "tits" while the women run around acting like it's an equal society under some kind of indigenous rule. It's so terribly sad, and a total drugfest.
So is burning man. With it's "pubic hair salons" (wtf?) and people painted all blue (woooh! *how "expressive"!*) and of course people running around naked. It's a freakshow and people either get the attention they so desperately crave or they get to see the "wild rumors" they heard about come to life.
It's neither here nor there, but this stuff just sounds juvenile, like people have to be repressed all year and go and absolve all morals and everything and get their kicks this *one* week. Why not work on getting through our repressions in daily life so we don't have to pull this MTV spring break type crap?

Oh these people aren't repressed all year. My friends that go are very into the club/music scene - a group of them are opening one of the largest nightclubs in San Francisco this weekend (www.templesf.com). They're also really into the art scene here. There are all sort of burning man fundraisers before hand to raise money for all the supplies at the camps and then there are decompression parties after...so a least here in SF there are almost year round events related to burning man. And the people I know that go are into the same things that draw them to the event year round. I think most of my friends actually do go for the music and art...but I would have to venture to guess that at least half the people there are just there to drop acid and run around naked while painted blue. The founders of Google still go every year and paint themselves blue!

Never been there but have heard of it and you'd better double check that food thing. Their website tells you to bring enough food and water for everyone in your party and even cautions you against bringing too much fresh food because it will rot in the dessert heat. There were something like 38,000 people there last year. Can you imagine them providing raw (or any kind of) food for all those people? I doubt it.
