    Default Juicing And Fiber

    I have been reading, "Green for Life". In the book, she says that she was juicing alot and not getting the fiber. Maybe this has been brought up before but what about adding the pulp after you juice to a smoothie for the extra fiber??

    Whatcha think? I know that the pulp would not have the enzymes but it would still have the fiber and you get the enzymes from the stuff you just blended for your smoothie.

    wouldnt the enzymes still be in the juice to digest the pulp?

    Or, you could balance your juicing by eating whole fruits and other fiber-rich foods like:

    Kale
    Collard
    Swiss Chard
    Almonds
    Brazil nuts
    Walnuts
    Flax (It offers soluble and insoluble fiber--26%!)

    There are a lot of great sources of fiber in raw foods. :)

    Well I do eats tons of fruit and raw veggies during the day but I keep thinking what a waste of fiber to throw out the pulp.

    As to the enzyme question, I would think that the juicer would extract all of the precious enzymes in the process of juicing. I could be wrong but that is what I have read.

    I feel that there is enough fiber in the rest of my diet to allow me to juice my greens.

    Belleadonna,

    You can use the pulp from carrots for making mock tuna or burgers. And do you have a garden? You could start a compost. Or, you can find a local organic farm who will trade you fresh produce for your compost, maybe. :)

    I think as raw vegans we get more than enough fibre! Juicing, IMHO, is a good thing. Plus, there really is no waste - because your body would expel the fibre anyway - you are doing it a favour, and making the nutrients much more available.

    Yes, the body does expel the fiber.. and all the gunk in the body that is hanging around from when eating not-so-good. Fiber good! Remember, not everybody here is really raw vegan. Some are still eating cooked foods, cooked cheese... maybe even dead animal flesh.. all of which needs fiber to eliminate..(although, I've heard that it takes YEARS to break down cooked cheese.)

    Let me make this clear. I am NOT against juicing. I love juicing and I do it all of the time. I don't think that we can get enough fiber as long as we are not going straight from 10 grams a day (SAD diet) to 70 grams a day. That would be a bit rough on the body. I just thought that a good use of the pulp would be to add some to a smoothie for some extra fiber. But I guess not!

    why dont you try it? :) if youre adding it to a smoothie i think thats a great idea. if youre adding it back into the juice i think nutritionally that would be fine also, but would semi-defeat the bioavailability of the nutrients in juice

    BUT neither choice is going to harm you in any way..do what tastes best to you. i love OJ with extra pulp in it..for whatever thats worth lol

    No, I wouldn't add it back to the juice. Yucky. But the blender would probably masticate it enough to make it smoother depending on what you have been juicing. I will give it a try sometime and let ya'll know.

    There may be fiber left, but I don't think it's full of nutrients at all. We did an experiment. Usually the squirrels and birds in our yard eat everything and anything we put out. The first time I ever juiced, my mom put the pulp on a tray and put it out. NO animal touched it! I found it rather interesting!

    I used to juice carrots, beets, and apples daily. This was before I found Raw. I definately felt better adding those juices to my daily diet. Now I don't want to waste the precious fiber. Fiber is what binds to toxins and carries them out of the body. The only time I juice now is when my vegetables are getting wilty.
