    Default Garbanzos with tails?

    I read the sprouting guide in Alissa's book very carefully but my garbanzo beans haven't sprouted. They just have little tails on them after 3 days. Has anyone had this happen before? Do you think I either (a) soaked too long or (b) the beans were no good to start with or (c) I'm an idiot? Haha! Anyone who picks "c" is going to get a noogie sandwich.

    mine only do small tails -they usually go bad when they sprout long tails

    Default One area where shorter is better...< grin >

    You don't want the sprouttails to be longer than the seed itself for most things. The only ones that I like longer would be alfalfa and mung bean sprouts, and those are better if the root is about 3/4"-1" long, I think. Much depends upon personal preference and willingness to try and screw up a few times. I gave up on chickpeas when I tried sprouting them some years ago, as they were very picky about how much water and how often to rinse them. I never did figure out a combination that would keep them damp enough without the things starting to mold.

    Good luck...at least, your compost pile will get real happy until you can figure out what conditions work best for each thing you're sprouting.

    Autumn DEFINITELY NOT C.

    I tried three times to sprout those darn beans, and they always got slimey first, I tried every thing I could think of. I am sure there is a very special way to do it, and that is fine, but I'm not tryin' again.

    Besides, I don't like raw garbanzo beans, and the only thing I liked cooked ones in was humus, and the raw zucchini humus is just as tasty.

    mine have never turned out bad......how do you make zuchini hummus-doesit taste alot like zuchini?

    Default My Garbanzos

    have never gone bad either ~ except when too old then they just sat there and ummm, putrefied.

    How DOES one make zucchinni hummus???? Tell! Tell!

    Default my first batch of "sprouted Hummus...

    The first time I sprouted my garbanzos, the hummus was awful. I had let the tails/sprouts grow too long. I just did another batch (LOVE HUMMUS) & I only let the sprout grow a little, then I really played w/the recipe to get rid of the "grassy" taste. I found by adding carrots, lots of lemon juice, curry, cayenne, (Like things spicy) & of course the traditional garlic , tahini, salt, & onion, I had finally made a BATCH I LOVED. Husband also loved. I test everything on him! LOL

    OH, I did add some fresh parsley. Wish I could give you the exact measurements, but I just mixed up the beans & started adding to my liking, & kept tasting along the way. I hope that helps. Happy sprouting

    I must have just got lucky. I soaked the garbanzo beans overnight and then hung them in a nut milk bag. I rinsed them 4 times a day for 2 days and I used them yesterday for hummus that I ate for lunch AND dinner !

    The pumpkin seeds rotted though and I composted those this morning. Thank God they weren't too stinky. I love the nut bags for sprouts. I'd never tried them before visiting this website and they are soooo easy! The plastic sprouting tray is history!

    Default Bet it was all that rinsing...

    I didn't rinse them that often when I tried sprouting garbanzos, so I bet 4xdaily had a lot to do with it. So much also depends upon the humidity level in your house as I almost got them to sprout okay when I lived in New Mexico but have never been able to here in Kansas.

    I think I'm more confused now, which is not difficult for me. Hee!

    When I said mine have little tails, I mean *little* - like the tails are barely peeking out, and the longest are not longer than the bean themselves. Are they supposed to get longer? I've been rinsing them 4x a day, by the way, and the house is not humid. They do not smell, nor do they show any signs of starting to mold. Should I give it a couple more days? How do you know when they are done?

    AND, please don't laugh, but when you sprout a bean like this, do you cut the tails/sprouts from the bean and just eat those, or do you eat the bean as well?

    Hi Autumn, I'm new to sprouting also, so don't feel bad. I read somewhere (don't remember where) that you only need about 1/8th inch of a sprout (tiny sprout/tail) off the bean.(NOt cut off-but growing off) ..LOL If it gets too long, it tastes weird. Anyways, I hope that helps. It should only take a day or 2 to sprout garbonzos.

    On my "Hummus" recipe before, I forgot to mention olive oil. Sorry That helps to smooth the dip. OH, I have always left the tails on. :) Good luck & happy sprouting.

    I ordered a kit. I'll let everyone know how I like it. :) I just did my first batch of alfalfa sprouts these past few days. They should be ready by tomorrow. Exciting watching them grow. Lana Q.

    Use them soon!!!!or refridgerate,I only sprout them for 2 days and theyre great....

    I think my sprouts were done yesterday and I didn't realize it. I thought they were going to look like alfalfa sprouts! What a doo-doo head.
