Thread: Over 50

I'm 64. I don't feel like it. I am striving for more raw foods, but, I suspect that cold weather might not make me feel like eating, or drinking cold foods.

I love certain veggies, and absolutely can't digest raw squash, or Sweet potatoes. I'm willing to go for the raw desserts, and such, but I need to live alone to do that. There is no way that I'm going to cook for a man, and myself if he's not willing to go at least mostly raw. There are times that I share space with a man, and most guys just don't "get" vegetarian foods. I prefer to cook for one, anyway, and let guys clean up after themselves, and cook for themselves, too. I paid my dues. My health is better since I've gone raw, and I never gain an ounce. When I experienced my first raw foods buzz, I was hooked. My bloodstream actually hummed with happiness. It was not an illusion.

Awesome - I'm 64 as well, and love raw! I have slid in and out, but generally feel best on raw, especially with including green smoothies daily in my diet. The green smoothies are what really connected me to raw, although I had been interested in and gone on and off over a period of years since the early 90s. Like you, I noticed a great feeling of energy and joy, just TWO DAYS after starting up with green smoothies. That's when I knew just how powerful this is. Keep on rockin' it, while all our contemporaries are on their various Rx's, etc.!

I'll be 52 in 2 1/2 weeks! I am new to raw. I don't know percentage but I'm raw 100% two to three days a week. I do still have some greek yogurt and egg whites and sugar free bread a couple times weekly but working toward stopping those. Even with the limited raw I am seeing changes in my body. I don't have as much pain (body aches) I have better mobility, my hot flashes are MUCH less (even though I'm on HRT I would still have breakthrough hot flashes)! The hot flashes crippled me and my quality of life. My skin is much better with fewer breakouts and it feels tighter! These benefits are certainly enough to nudge me toward more raw!

Some where in this post I think I jumped on the over 50 bandwagon... but I'm jumping again since it's been awhile since I've been here! I'm 55 and here in Hawaii I can now officially get my 10% senior citizen discount! whOooHooOoo!!
I do think that there are challenges that we face being over 50 (especially if we haven't taken the best care of ourselves in the first 50)! I am so looking forward to healing, finding balance again, and gettin my sexy back! heheheee!!

I'm 52 and went 100% raw on August 20th. I tried eating raw back in the late 80s and loved it, but didn't stick with it. Various health issues have kind of cropped up and it just hit me that the best I had ever felt in my life was when I was eating raw, so why not start again with it. I read a ton of stuff online and books - then just went for it. I have a problem with my thyroid, meaning I swing from hyperthyroid to hypothyroid - when I'm hyperthyroid the weight falls off incredibly quickly, when I'm hypo - the weight just piles on. This is despite medication and regular blood tests and monitoring. So I'd like to hope that raw may eventually help to get that balanced again. I've spent so much time reading on this forum the last few days, but hadn't noticed this over-50 thread until today. Nice to 'meet' you.

Hi all! Today is my 52nd birthday! I've been juicing and eating raw for a month now (I'd say 85 percent). I'm striving to do a 30 day raw challenge (95 percent) with a LOT of juicing. I'm not feeling well for about three days now and don't know if it's detox or the weather (I live in the humid south and it has been raining for a couple days.........temp up and down etc! hahahaa)
Today I broke and made black bean brownies and had some store bought IC, also ate some raw almonds.....but I did begin the day with green juice and carrot juice, having no coffee. I can really use some support right now as I am being lead to this vegan life and a life of gentleness. I've had anger surfacing over the weekend (not handling stress well at all). I believe this is part of the detox process. Any thoughts, suggestions or exerience?
    Thanks

Hi Pami. Support is here. You are absolutely correct. Emotional imbalances are part of detoxing our old memories linked with certain foods. It's been proven that when we're young and have an emotional outburst or negative feeling, then are given food to comfort that (esp. from our parents whom we trust) emotion, it gets stored in our cells. When we release toxins, our bodies are trying to release this 'toxic' cell as well.

I love the term 'healing process' rather than detox or healing crisis. It's more gentle....just what we want. Sometimes it's wise to get a life-coach to get thru this. It's almost like alcoholics need AA and a good support team. Smokers need a nicotine anonymous class for support. We cooked-food addicts need a support group and one on one counseling in the beginning. Or else we go back to what our 'cells' tell us what feels good; albeit not good for us. Like we know nicotine is not good for us, but when we need a fix, the body's cells think it's good for us. Thus creating a craving.

Sorry to ramble. Just wanted to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY and good luck on the healing journey!! Let all that anger out and replace it with LOVE, PEACE and HAPPINESS!!!

Bonnie, Thank you so much for your kind words. I love "healing process" as well. That's exactly what it is. I started this journey (fasting) during lent in March and wonderful things happened......proof that this is a "healing process" and "healing journey". I think now I am at a deeper place.....healing the deeper emotions. I'm hoping, praying and expecting that when I get over this hump (cold/healing) that I will have a clearer vision.

I haven't been here in awhile but it's great to see that this thread is still alive and well.
It's been a rough year for me. I lost my dad and my uncle and there has just been alot of stress with the settling of the estate and all.
I haven't been eating like I should but I am bounding back in with both feet. I am starting a slow transition and beginning a cleansing diet. I am striving to be 85% raw now but I am not making any rules other than NO MEAT!!
I'll be back here more often now and keep an update on my progress.

Hi belleadonna - that's a very rough year you've had. I know my eating went completely haywire after my dad died back in 2008, and it has taken me until now to bounce back. So I reckon you're doing brilliantly. Nice to meet you :-)
