    Default Another newbie question

    Hi all,
I recently ordered some seeds to sprout and one of them was sunflower seeds. My question is when I come across a recipe that says sunflower seeds or add ground sunflower seeds do they mean without the hull or does it hurt after soaking them to use them with the hull? Thank you for comments. :)

If I'm not mistaken, I "think" they mean hulled. I usually buy them already hulled..in fact, where I shop, they don't even sell them in the hulls.

But who knows...maybe after soaking the hulls are usable (??)

Hmm well even in Alissa's book concerning sprouting them she says you can use them after you soak them don't have to wait until they sprout but doesn't say anything about taking the hulls off.

Please do not ever eat sunflower seed hulls. They are difficult to digest and can stick in little pockets of your colon causing irritation, blockages and even infection...

Okay, here's my understanding -- no guarantees, though. I believe I read somewhere that you buy the unhulled for growing sunflower sprouts in soil, and you buy the hulled to use recipes calling for the seeds. I think when they call for sunflower seeds, soaked or sprouted, they mean soaked and water only, rinsed and allowed to form a little tail. Otherwise, if a recipe calls for sunflower seeds and doesn't mention that they should be soaked or sprouted, you can just use the regular, little grey hulled seed. Hope that helps! :)
