Favorite Wheatgrass Juicer?
High all!
So, I have been juicing wheatgrass with my Norwalk for the past 11 years. It works alright, but I must admit that it's a less-than-ideal situation in that I have to offset the heating of the components by slipping in ice cubes intermittently. Obviously, this waters-down the juice, and the machine STILL overheats often. I think that it just cannot handle wheatgrass that well.
Over the years, I have increased my wheatgrass consumption more and more. I really enjoy the stuff. I'd guess that I'm averaging between 20-30 ounces weekly.
I think I am ready to invest in a separate, more-ideal wheatgrass juicer. I've been looking into the stainless steel, manually-operated, clamp-on-the-counter variety. They seem great, although I have a friend that says they're hard to take apart and put back together (necessary for washing).
What are YOUR thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks! :)

Hey there. I posted this in a prior thread (wheatgrass tutorial)
Here is the BEST sprouter (mho). I have two of these and love them:

I buy my red winter wheat (hard) from www.sproutpeople.com
I would suggest checking this book out from the library to learn all there is to know about wheatgrass. The Wheatgrass Book by Ann Wigmore.
I use this hand-crank juicer.

This price for the Healthy Juicer beats any around. http://www.dancingdragonenterprises.com/... go to "resources" and you see it. Price includes shipping. Add Ca. tax if appropriate.

Thanks for the info, folks. :)
I should mention that I am a steadfast plastics-avoider. So I am interested in knowing about the options that are stainless steel (as juicing machines don't come in glass, LOL, and that is my preferred kitchen material).
I am attracted to the hand-crank variety of juicers as I love not using electric devices as much as is possible. I have been checking out this model.
Veganforlife, I am a HUGE fan of Ann Wigmore and have many of her books, including The Wheatgrass Book. She is one of my most-favorite live food gurus! Thanks for the info on sprouting. Unfortunately, I do not have the space for wheatgrass-growing as all of our available growing space is already claimed by other veggies, flowers, etc. Luckily, however, there is a super-righteous local wheatgrass operation, here, and I purchase large quantities of it from them, weekly. I'm thankful for their existence and my opportunity to serve them as well as benefitting from their services.

I have an omega, it is awesome!

Thanks for your response Lay-Lay.
Is your Omega specifically for wheatgrass juicing?
I already have a Norwalk for general juicing and am now looking for the optimal device for wheatgrass juicing.
-
mainly, but you can also juice other things, although I primarly just use mine for wheatgrass and making icecream!

Do any of the internal components become warm/hot?
What about under the condition of juicing a large quantity of wheatgrass at once - say, 10 ounces? Does it become warm then?

You can check out that stainless steel manual juicer at this link

Easy to use and clean. Plus livingright.com got great prices and excellent customer service.
And that manual juicer will last a very long time.

That one looks excellent, Craig. Thanks for the link.
It actually looks even simpler (which I prefer) than the other stainless steel similar model I've been checking out, and the price is about the same. I think I'm going to order this one.
Do you own one of these, Craig?

nope
and it will do far more then that. At class I used to juice wheatgrass by the gallons at one time and it never gets tired out.

Thanks Lay-Lay.
I actually went ahead and ordered the one that Craig recommended. I did a little research and it looks like the best one for my needs at this time. Being that I already own a large electric countertop juicer, I was feeling reluctant to get another of those.
I like that this hand-crank model can travel with me, too. :)

Yep, I sure do and I am pretty happy with it.
Here is some few pointers here about the manual juicer.
The endcap screws in counter-clockwise and screw out clockwise.
While it comes with a wench, you don't need to use the wench. Just hand tighten it. The rudder gasket inside the endcap will last longer that way. Just hand tighten enough for a good seal.
When you feed the wheatgrass through the juicer and it goes through the auger, you want to feel a little resistance as you hand crank the handle clockwise. It will start to juice as you feel a little resistance as you crank the handle clockwise. If you don't feel the resistance as the wheatgrass goes through the auger, just turn the handle counter-clockwias for a few turns and recrank the handle clockwise again.
It is very fast and easy to clean. Just run the auger, endcap, and screen through running water and run a moist towel inside the housing to clean inside. But you might want to run water inside of the housing once a while.
