    Default Help with sprouts

    Hi

I've tried a few raw reciepes that called for almonds soaked over night, then I read somwhere that comercial almonds rarely are raw, and therefor does not sprout.
So the million dollar qouesiton is: how can you tell when almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds and other common sommercial seed sprout? I put mine in water over night and they had just split and become watery when I ate them in the morning...

Almonds you buy in the store are raw, the reason they dont sprout is because they are gasssed (usually nitrogen) to keep out insects. My family spent many years growing commercially for Blue Diamond. Hope that helps...

So since they don't sprout, does that mean their enzymes are killed by gassing?

Logically I would think so because the Nitrogen removes the oxygen and that would make it non viable? However, I have sprouted wheatberries that have been gassed for storage. So that makes it perplexing...unless it neutalizes the enzym in almonds and not in wheatberries...not sure on that.

Boy, I guess Raw can be a relative term then, huh.........so, apparently it's worth spending the extra money to get seeds labeled for the use of sproutingthen, eh?
