    Default Unroasted Coffee Beans

Hello! I'm having a tough time finding why it's necessary to roast coffee beans before making coffee. Is it possible to make a cup of coffee with unroasted coffee beans and water that isn't heated above 115˚? Are there risks if you don't roast the coffee beans?

I don't think there are any risks. I think it's about flavor. I'm not sure how much (or how pleasant) flavor you'll get out of green coffee beans and water below 115 F.

Out of curiosity, are you trying to get a coffee-flavored warm beverage, or is the point just to figure it out and see what it tastes like?

I suppose the idea of heating food above 115 degrees kills its enzymes applies to coffee beans as well. But, I don't want to suppose, that's why I'm asking. I guess I could try it myself to see how it tastes.

I think that there are more down sides to drinking coffee than the fact that it is heated. It contains many compounds that are bad for you.

i may be wrong here... but when I went to Cornwall to see the Eden Project (a BIG greenhouse) there was a cofee plant, and i remember reading that the raw beans are poisonous and hallucinigenic!

Go here to read about coffee: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coffee

Apparently the beans are very bland when green.

Coffee is extremely unhealthy regardless of what Starbuck's wants you to think. There are bunches of threads in the archives that have links to medical information. I believe the most startling is that it compromises the functioning of your adrenal glands.

But -- that's not what you asked. Sorry.

I personally love coffee. I think its good for you. It has been linked to fighting cancer and not to forget (at least for me) it helps relieve stress. I don't smoke so I have a good cup of coffee or tea instead. It might be cheating in the raw life style.. buts its one of my own lil cheats. I'd say brew the real stuff. The kind you want to make probably wouldn't taste great

    Coffee
The studies just keep pouring in on the benefits of drinking coffee. Higher consumption has been linked to decreasing the risk of type 2 diabetes and Parkinson's disease. It's also been shown to stop headaches and preventing cavities. Adding sugar and whole milk complicates matters, though skim milk can be a vehicle for calcium and Vitamin D. Black, however, is usually best, says registered dietician Elisa Zied.

I found this very interesting and reassuring. Afterall, Dra without coffee isn't a pretty sight lol.
;) Perhaps the world only speaks to those prepared to listen.
