Apples and plums as natural system cleanser?
Greetings,
I do not know if this subject has been touched on, but i wanted to get more information on natural (raw foods) system cleansers verses the drinks, powders, etc..
I have experienced (on an empty stomach) apples and plums as a system cleanser. Are there any other fruits or vegetables that can cleanse the system as well? Information and advise will be greatly appreciated :-)

We sure experienced the efficiency of plums this summer!! About 4 was plenty per day...they sure went right through! We're eating wonderful apples now that they are in season. We pick them right off the local farmers trees. Many varieties, only 40 cents a pound. We dip them in RP's infamous Carmel Sauce!!!! Yum-O! ;)

Tropical fruits with strong protein-disolving enzymes like Citrus, Papaya, & Pineapple are very cleansing. A standard diet of melons will really help with hydration, nutrients, and general cleansing action.

There is no such thing as a cleansing food. Fruits have this reputation because they are pre-digested, so they allow the body to direct the energy it 'normally' has to expend on digestion to cleansing old wastes. When we say "pre-digested", we mean that the amino acids are free, they are not bound together as protein (we don't even need protein, we need amino acids), their fats are unbound as fatty acids and their sugars are simple and not in long chains that our bodies have trouble getting apart (as in the case of starch, which is a long chain sugar).
The key to cleansing is eating foods that don't create waste. Fruit is at the top of that list, followed by lettuce and celery. Nuts and seeds create waste, but at least they are partially recognizable and usable by the body, if they are not cooked.
Food is supposed to be digested quickly, but if you have loose stools or diarrhea it means there's something in the digestive tract that the body wants to get rid of quickly. This can sometimes be the consequence of miscombining, because fruit that is eaten with other foods or on top of other foods can ferment and this process creates toxic by-products that the body seeks to hastily discard.
Happy cleansing,
Nora

I agree with pineapple! Lemon water is supposed to be good. I also like grapefruit. All these consumed alone seem to work; but probably any fruit, really. The apples you mentioned too. I read on an Ayurveda site that pears alone is good for this.
Also, spinach smoothies are pretty much a guarantee :)

Kudos for that input. That made a lot of sense.
I have a question regarding the miscombining of food. I generally make smoothies that have fruits and some green leafy vegetables in them and I'm curious as to whether or not it is more or less beneficial for me to combine what i'm combining. I often include apples, pears, with some kiwi, celery, and either lettuce or kale. I've always felt fine after consuming it, but extra knowledge on proper food combining can't hurt.
Thanks.

Universal,
In early transition, combining isn't a super important issue because the primary goal of transitioning is to stay on track and if you try to mono-eat or even combine properly, you'll most likely feel very unsatisfied and backslide. In the beginning, I'd go so far as to say it's even a *good* thing to miscombine because this is what the body is accustomed to.
Proper combining becomes important as your body gets healthier, you get more comfortable eating simply, and your withdrawal symptoms (from cooked food) get easier to handle. As these things happen, your body becomes more efficient -- that is, more of what you eat actually gets through your intestinal membranes to your bloodstream. This means that harmful by-products of miscombining will cause symptoms, where they didn't before. When people start to notice feeling nauseous or lethargic after certain combinations, or have some form of gastric distress, they generally start learning about and applying combining rules.
It's good to learn these things in advance and be prepared to make changes when you notice symptoms after eating.

Nora

Thanks for your input Nora.
I've actually been raw for well over a year now. (since Feb. '05) And I've noticed naturally that my food choices have been a lot more simple and I do a lot less combining of foods. The only real time that I combine foods is when I make my green smoothies with the above fruits and vegetables that I mentioned. I just want to be sure that I'm getting the best possible benefit from each fruit and vegetable that I'm using in my combinations, and that hopefully one is not conflicting with the other in some way, shape, or form. I haven't felt any real symptoms afterwards. I usually make them after a workout, which works great for me replenishing my system.
Thanks again.

I've heard that a great cleansing or detox agent is the acai berry which I read about. It also has vital nutrients to keep you healthy while cleaning out. www.mymonavie.com/midwestmonvie.
good luck
