    Default B12 Question-What Kind?

I'm a little bit confused. What type of B12 is the best: Cyanobalmin or methylcobalamin? And I think there is another one too called adenosylcobalamin.
I've been resarching it and have found that methyl is so much better absorbed by the body but it is much rarer to find this as B12 but I also remember somone on these boards saying that Cyan is the one to get.

    So which is it?

    Thanks in advance!

Everything I have read says that methylcobalamin is best.

I will get the methyl although I wish the person who had recommend the cyan would come foward and say why.

Pansy-yes the banana does have tons of info-I searched that but couldn't really find my answer. I think it's a good idea for b12 issues to stay current on the boards though as it is so important.

5 months into raw and I think my daughter may have been b12 deficient. She was getting tingling in her hands and feet.

    Question B-12

A few days after starting my RAW journey a Vegetarian told me, "Make sure you get enough B-12."

Well, I guess I didn't even think that I could be deficient in any of the vitamins/minerals if I was eating a well-balanced RAW diet. And I hadn't even been concerned about it ... until reading this.

Do I need to worry about supplementing my RAW diet? If so, what vitamins/minerals should I be concerned about?

First off, how do you know you're deficient?

We, as vegetarians and raw food eaters are all told and warned about this, but as Dr. Graham has stated, B-12 deficiency was orignally discovered in meat eaters. Anybody can have a deficiency, not only vegetarians.

So do you know if you are deficient? Do you have symptoms or have you taken a blood test to determine this?

And how do we know what supplement to take and in which amount?

When we eat whole foods, they supply nutrients in perfect amounts the way they were created for us, so who determines what is the correct amount or correct type of nutrient for us?

    Unhappy

Maybe I should have said, "I didn't even know I could 'get' deficient" ... as far as I know I am not deficient in any viatmins/minerals.

My next Dr. appt is in December (I go every 3 months for diabetic checkups).

My Dr. did want me to go back on insulin (I took myself off a year ago). When I explained that I had just switched to a RAW diet he said he'd wait and seen what happens during these next 3 months.

Girlsmiley I wasn't directing the questions/statements to anyone in particular. Just wanted to put some perspective in to the B12 fear.

Today it's B12 defiency, tomorrow who knows what nutrient they'll discover that we 'need'.

Quite possibly. B12 is the only one you might need to worried about. I'd recommend just getting a yearly blood test for B12 and supplement if your levels start dropping.

My understanding is that B 12 is made from 'sludge', ahemm, not good. But it is in Spirulina and Chlorella. So I add some 'green goo' to my smoothies every now and then.

    Queen Shelley-
Spirulina and chlorella have b12 but it is not in a useable form to the human body and I do remember hearing that it can actually interfer with the useable b12 in our bodies.

THERE ARE NO RELIABLE VEGAN SOURCES OF B12. YOU MUST SUPPLEMENT. B12 DEFICIENCY IS VERY SERIOUS!

Sorry for shouting but I just need to get this accross. I've been a vegan for 4 years and I think I've been deficient twice in b12. I am going to make sure this never happens again.

To add to my post above: Last Summer when I realized my symptoms could be b12 defiency I took some liquid b12 and ended up overdosing on it. Although that was uncomfortable because your body is so hot all over with a rash, I felt much better the next day. My deficiency symptoms went away.

    B12 really is so important!
