    Default How to grow wheatgrass?

Can anyone advise me on this? I've never even tasted the stuff, but have read so many great things about it, that I'd love to try to grow some to drink. Any starting tips/advice?

it is the easiest thing you could ever grow .

seeds are about as big as bb's but oval . just broadcast them out of your hand so that you get a pattern of about a seed every third of an inch . then cover with about a quarter inch of soil , water very good , then water every few days . in about 8 days the grass shall be about 4 - 5 inches . start using then , cut off at soil level with utility scissors .

can grow outside or i grow inside in cheap plastic dish pans filled with 3 to 4 inches of soil .

and dont need a juicer , just fill blender half full or more with water . take about 75 blades or so , cut into half inch peices so they cant wrap around blender blade and bog it . blend on fast a minute . then let set 5 minutes or more so minerals / nutrients seep out of grass , then strain to remove grass and you have your potent raw cell fuel and one of natures great medicines . cheers

I enjoy wheatgrass! It is awesome. I grow it slighty different then roman.

I soak hard wheatberries (1 cup) over night in a mason jar with water 3 inches above the berries. Then the next morning I drain the water off and cover the top of the jar with some wedding veil material and secure it with a rubber band or whatever. Then I place the jar upside down on a 45 degree angel. I let them stay that way until they grow a small tail of about 1/4 to 1/2 inch then I fill a planting tray with soil, sprinkle the sprouted wheatberries all over the top (I do not cover them with soil). I lightly water and place the tray in a black trash bag and place in indirect sunlight and leave for three days. THen I take it out of the bag and water, leave it to grow some more for a couple of days, watering lightly once or twice daily. THen I cut and juice and enjoy.

I grow mine with out soil in trays and in an automatic sprouter. Ann Wigmore is the one who made it popular. She has a book called the Wheatgrass Book, among several other informative raw lifestyle books.

Let us know how you like it. Some people love it, while others don't. I thought it was ok at first, but I grew to really enjoy it.

I'm using the wheatberries I bought for rejuvelac, since that turned out horrendous and I won't be making it again. I just ordered a manual wheatgrass juicer off of ebay, as my Breville wont juice it, I believe. I soaked my berries last night and am letting them sit out drained today until I can get some soil tomorrow to attempt planting them.

Why is it that some people cover them or keep them in darkness for a few days before putting them in the sun? Some people don't, so I was wondering what the difference is, or if it really matters.

Also, there are ZERO places in my apartment that let the sun shine in like is necessary. Do you think I'll still be ok growing it?

You don't have to grow them in soil, and if your just trying to see if you like it this way is less of an investment. If you have a wire mesh strainer it works great. Set the strainer in a bowl, most of those types of strainer have a long handle then hooks so you can set them into a bowl without the bottom of the strainer hitting the bottom of the bowl. Then put your seeds in the strainer and soak 12 to 24 hours. Drain and rinse the seeds then put the strainer back into the bowl. Rinse the seeds in the collander twice a day. You'll see them start to sprout, the roots will grow down, through the mesh of the strainer. Once the roots start to push through the mesh you'll want to put water back in the bowl the strainer is sitting in, just enough to touch the root tips, you don't want to submerse the seeds. I put a bit of seaweed in the water for nutrients. Your not going to grow as much grass this way, but you will get enough to figure out if you like it or not. Of course the bigger the strainer the more grass you can grow. You don't need a whole lot of seeds, just enough to cover the bottom of the strainer. If you have more so there is a thicker layer that works just fine as well.
