Default Do you cull flaxseeds or any other seeds to get rid of the 4 Ds?

I cull all my seeds/nuts/grains to pick out the 4 Ds: Decayed, Discolored, Dented, and Dwarfed. I always find lots of decayed seeds/grains and foreign objects when I cull, no matter whether they are purchased from bulk(WholeFoods) or reputable retailors (sunorganics.com, sproutspeople.com). However, because seeds, such as flax and sesame, are so small, I spend 80% of my food preparation culling when I have to use them(I actually go through almost every one of them).

Do you cull? Does it take you this long time?

I do cull, but very quick only.

And I noticed it's usually only the buckwheat that needs culling, the rest of the seeds are ok. I never culled beans too although you should.

But flax, sesame or any of the smaller things I never cull, it would take me ages. But I never noticed bad flax or sesame or any other seeds either. They look okay to me.

    I am just a lazy quick-culler

    Hi Mel,

Thanks for your reply. REally? You never see bad flaxseeds? I've purchased flaxseeds from 5 different sources already, and when I cull, I always find lots of bad seeds and foreign objects.

    Hi Linda,

honestly, I never thought of culling flax or sesame. It just never occurred to me there might be something in that doesn't belong there.

I get my flax from a friend who owns a store with an attached bakery. It's otherwise almost impossible to buy flax here at all.

I noticed that sometimes in my buckwheat there are small stones and bad seeds, but the majority of my seeds and grains is really okay.

Well, maybe I just should start looking closer? No, better not...
