This website will tell you every thing you need to know about durians, including why most western peoples dislike it. It's a great site. Even if you already know all about durians, this is a great site to sheck out. I finally bought my first two durians today and I think it smells heavenly. I can't wait to try it.
I am pleased to report that I had my first ever durian experience about 10 minutes ago. It had been sitting out for a day or two after thawing and it had a sweet, earthy smell to it. I opened a rather large and slightly overripe durian using a steak knife. It was stiff on the outside but still pliable and fairly easy to cut open. I used a towel on either side of the cut I made to pull it open. Upon opening, my olfactory was flooded with a pungent, sweet slash savory aroma. Very strong but not 'bad' in any sense. It looked nothing like a fruit inside, but rather, like the internal organs of some strange alien. It resembled lungs or kidneys a bit. I was even more intrigued. I spooned it out and removed the large, globular, brown seed from the center and took the first big bite. It smelled sweeter from far away and more like savory garlic or onion when brought closer to my nose. As I mentioned, the one I got was a little overripe by what I've read and since it was frozen, that probably contributed to the slightly-too-soft texture. It tasted very rich and the only way I can describe it is to say that it tasted like a very mellow, creamy, yet sweet onion soup. Very interesting. It warmed my body instantly and was slightly intoxicating, in a way. I feel a little of a high after eating it in fact. I was only able to take about 3 big bites because it was so rich and filling so I put the rest in tupperware and froze it. I ate it with my fingers and didn't rinse them off, just wiped them and the aroma on my skin is different than strait from the fruit. It smells more like a savory, cooked dinner on my hands. I totally get why it is an aphrodesiac, BTW ;). So my overall experience is "wow, mmmm". What an interesting, sensual, strange and exotic fruit this is. I'll be trying them again every once in awhile to taste different ones and see if my opinion of them gets greater or lesser. It cost me about 9 dollars for one medium-large sized one and the amount of actual flesh I got was probably not worth that much but the overall experience was definitely worth it. I urge you all to try it. You may not like it but come at it with an open mind and see. Keep trying it also because you may not always get a good one and the taste is supposed to grow on people. On a botanical note, the durian is supposed to have remained the same without evolving or dying off since the beginning of this rawsome planet, so we are eating a truly pre-historic fruit here.
Awesome!! Thanks for sharing your experience! I'm so excited to get one! and a bit nervous! lol !
your description is beautiful and is exactly what I felt when I bought my first whole durian.
I was so excited and a bit nervous too and when I openend it and tried it, it was the most incredible sensation I ever had.
Every day is a new day - embrace it!
