    Default Rust on Lettuce?

What exactly is that 'rust' on lettuce after a couple days and do you eat the lettuce with it on or discard it? Thanks!!

I don't think it is actual rust, the lettuce just tends to turn brown around the edges and along the spine if it sits in a sweaty bag too long.

I just discovered a bag of forgotten romaine hearts that was half-brown and mushy. It wasn't pretty!

Cutting it with a metal knife will cause that. I don't eat the brown parts. I throw them out.

eating the brown parts is probably not going to do you any harm but will not do you as much good as fresh stuff so if you have plenty, discard it, but if it is all that you have, eat it.
