    Default New Study on Vegan Diet Reversing Diabetes!!

    I was checking cnn.com and came across this article! Wow, then I think...a raw vegan diet would do even more if a vegan diet reverses diabetes. Maybe meat and milk is linked to diabetes? But it seems that way!

    WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- People who ate a low-fat vegan diet, cutting out all meat and dairy, lowered their blood sugar more and lost more weight than people on a standard American Diabetes Association diet, researchers said this week.

    They lowered their cholesterol more and ended up with better kidney function, according to the report published in Diabetes Care, a journal published by the American Diabetes Association.

    Participants said the vegan diet was easier to follow than most because they did not measure portions or count calories. Three of the vegan dieters dropped out of the study, compared with eight on the standard diet.

    "I hope this study will rekindle interest in using diet changes first, rather than prescription drugs," Dr. Neal Barnard, president of the Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine, which helped conduct the study, told a news conference Thursday.

    An estimated 18 million Americans have type-2 diabetes, which results from a combination of genetics and poor eating and exercise habits. They run a high risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, blindness and limb loss.

    Barnard's team and colleagues at George Washington University, the University of Toronto and the University of North Carolina tested 99 people with type-2 diabetes, assigning them randomly to either a low-fat, low-sugar vegan diet or the standard American Diabetes Association diet.

    After 22 weeks on the diet, 43 percent of those on the vegan diet and 26 percent of those on the standard diet were either able to stop taking some of their drugs such as insulin or glucose-control medications, or lowered the doses.

    The vegan dieters lost 14 pounds on average while the diabetes association dieters lost 6.8 pounds.

    An important level of glucose control called a1c fell by 1.23 points in the vegan group and by 0.38 in the group on the standard diet.

    THIS IS SO COOL!!

    I'm right now talking to a young woman who is trying to lose weight, and she's pre-diabetic. I don't know if I'll get her to try it but hey what's to lose besides illness and weight

    It talks about asthma and other ailments along with diabetes. I hope she sees the light!! lol

    The latest that I have read is that being diabetic takes 15 years from life expectancy.

    Check out The pH Miracle for Diabetes by Robert O. Young - this eliminates type 2 diabetes and if I remember correctly even type 1.

    I don't find this to be of much use at all. None of the diabetics I know eat the standard ADA diet. If they did, their blood sugar would be through the roof! That diet was designed for people with type 1 who have to use insulin. People with type 1 have a lot more leeway with their diet.

    At the time of my diagnosis with type 2, I was a vegetarian. I did eat cheese and eggs but not a lot of them. The bulk of my diet was beans and rice and other vegetables. That had to change. Too many carbs in beans and rice for a diabetic! I do know some vegetarians and vegans who are diabetics. In no way can we eat what might be considered a standard vegetarian/vegan diet. We have to watch our carbs. And alas the typical vegetarian/vegan diet is pretty high in carbs. So is the ADA diet. That's why it doesn't work.

    We do have to watch our carbs, but the article does say a low-fat, low-sugar vegan diet Which would include carbs I would think. I have to follow a low sugar/carb raw food diet and my blood sugar now is in the 80's range. I love how they have pictures of raw foods! This makes me sooooooooo happy. It is so nice to have some validation out there that you are not the freak, and that you are on the right path. So tired of having to explain myself!!!!

    Actually, see the quote:

    "The diet did not restrict carbohydrate, it could be high carbohydrate, the diet didn't restrict calories, it didn't restrict portion size" (from another link, http://www.cbc.ca/story/science/nati...tes-vegan.html).

    So no, no restriction on carbohydrates, only on the added sugar.

    Do you guys think they used natural whole grains, instead of bread and pasta? I know it says something about oatmeal.


    You guys, I am just going to love to bring this in to my chiropractor that would not stop telling me that a vegan diet was bad for diabetes. She just thought everyone and their brother should be eating a dead animal, or raw dairy.

    I've been to three dieticians as a vegetarian. One of them was fine with a vegetarian diet. The other two didn't seem to know so much about it, but I also think that dieticians seem to push those foods that they like.

    The Endo I'm seeing now was told about the raw vegan diet and he was fine with it. Am still waiting to see how my next labs come out. A1c has gone up since starting this and I'm still not 100% raw and then there was the issue of protein in my urine. Not sure what that is about. I do know that I've been eating less food overall and less calories than I was before. And in the last few weeks, I've been having hypos again. So that's not good.

    Makes sense to me considering the whole basis of diabetes is endocrin/hormone/insulin and dead animals are laden with synthetic growth hormones and overfed before slaughter

    Even the way in which animals are slaughtered impacts the health of consumer. That's why there are kosher and halal instructions/law related to animal slaughter for consumption.

    Flesh foods gross me out, and I've finally had my fill of chicken embryos too.

    My last visit with her is tommorow. Last week I went into see here again, had not seen her in awhile. It was kinda emergency TMJ issue. The first second I walked in the door I felt this negative vibe. She is very bossy and domminering. That moment I knew that it was over, that I had been thru to much healing to put up with that crap any longer. I scheduled one last appointment with her tommorow, and then I am gonna see someone new next week. I am firing her!!! I am also going to bring in a copy of that study and just hand it to her and say, eating meat isn't for everyone! LOL

    She was rude, she was mad because she wanted me to eat meat. She kept on trying to reccomened herself as someone who could reccomend guidence, so I told her "I just want to let you know that I am not going to eat meat" and she said, well you better find someone else.

    The sad thing is she is overweight, and has allergy problems, and keeps on trying to push raw dairy on my roomate. I do feel bad for her, because I know she isn't happy. Nothing I can do though.
