    Question Soy Protein?

My sister is a physical trainer and told me last night that I should look into drinking a soy protein shake in the mornings so that I am not lacking protein in my diet. Is this raw?

First of all, it's not only not raw, it's unhealthy. I'm suprised people are still caught up in the protein myth. (not you, her). Please go to the home page and look at what Alissa's written on the "Need to Know more about Raw?" section. That may allay your potential fears.

There is nobody in the western world suffering from a lack of protein and lots suffering from too much.
Soy is not considered a healthy food and should be avoided even in its natural state. Processed soy is considerably worse and is also genetically modified.
You get more than enough protein from the good natural foods that you eat.

As has been mentioned, soy (especially those shakes) is not healthy (in my opinion)...and those shakes are not raw and often full of nasty ingredients. I would recomend a green smoothie instead if you are worried about protein

anything that comes in a can probably isn't going to be raw. Please do read the chapter in Alissa's book about Frequently Asked Questions... protein is discussed. Also, I think it's on this forum......

Personally I get about 30 grams of protein a day through fruits, veg, nuts and seeds. I'm gaining muscle and I've never felt better

First of all, I imagine that your sister is not raw so she is still influenced by the cooked/SAD views of health and nutrition, so as a raw foodist, you probably shouldn't take any health advice from her or other cooked eaters. Just because she is a health or fitness trainer does not mean she knows what she is talking about. Most of America (including mainstream health practitioners/coaches) are misguided with incorrect information.

Secondly, you will get all the protein (amino acids) you need and more from dark leafy greens and some nuts and seeds.

Finally, soy is generally not a healthy food to eat. It contains dangerous phytoestrogens that cause hormonal imbalances and it really isn't the "protein packed miracle food" that America has dubbed it in the last 20 years or so.

I wouldn't worry about protein if I were you, you will get enough and a "protein shake" generally isn't raw. I imagine that if you managed to find totally raw soy beans and made a smoothie with them it could be raw but then again, soy isn't healthy and it would be hard to find soy beans raw, I think. Tell your sister that since you're raw and a shake generally isn't, you shouldn't eat them. You might also educate her about what raw foods really have the amino acids that the body makes into protein.

I'm with you, revvel, this is ridiculous. Everyone is so darn concerned with protein. That is the FIRST thing people ask about in panic mode when they hear I'm raw. "How do you get enough protein???" "You need tons of protein". This doesn't make any sense. There are other nutrients far more important or equal to protein, it takes a long time to become deficient, hardly anyone in America has a protein deficiency and usually they get too much. Regardless though, the body makes protein from 8 amino acids and every natural raw food contains amino acids in some concentration and leafy greens are the highest, I believe. You don't need rice protein or any of that stuff. No one should even be worried about protein! Everything on this earth is composed of the same some odd elements in different concentrations and that includes food. Some things are just higher in certain nutrients than pthers. So just eat a well rounded, raw, vegan diet. Simple.

    Unhappy Tone in Replys...

I am aware that most of you are very passionate about your way of life but when a newbie asks a simple question they did not expect to raise any feathers. Please do not make these simple questions a debate of sorts. A simple yes or no is sufficient. Thank you all for your words of advice and I definitely will not be eating any shakes of any kind...

    Hey Cwareing :)

You you called it totally right! PASSION hehe

Don't feel upset for even one second because people answered with whole hearted conviction.

I have learned something here that even in the RAW world, like everywhere, you will get a variety of answers, opinions and thoughts

One of the things that is so important is the input from everyone.

We must take people as they are and take with us the gems of imformation that they give.

If we all lived a week together, I guarentee that we would not all get along completely. Just our common thread of Raw and healthy eating brings us together.

You did right asking your question and it is difficult sometimes for us to remember that we too were learning these very things

Listen to me! hahah Ive been here 45 Days. I'm a newbie too and learning everyday

Stay and ask more questions :)

Sorry if we jumped on you but to rawfoodists the protein question is a little bit of a "red flag to a bull". It raises hackles.
Do not let our bluntness put you off. We are all harmless underneath it.

WE grow fastest and require more protein than at any other time of life when we are first born. Mothers breast milk, which is the perfect food for us, is between 1 and 4 percent protein - that's it!

Woops, I totally didn't mean to seem like I was lashing out at you, I was actually aiming my 'argument' at cooked skeptics . After being a raw foodist for a while, I've had so many people harp on about how horrible this way of life is and how it makes no sense and most of these people happen to be involved in healthcare somehow and it always just baffles me so I tend to get a little short. I wasn't aiming any of that toward you. Sorry if it felt that way. I'm glad you're here and learning and asking questions. Please don't hesitate to ask as many as you need to and take advantage of the search function as well. We are all happy to help you :)
