I planted 24 tomato plants this year. About 18 are heirlooms, the rest are cherry, grape and currant varieties. I'm with you guys, the best tasting tomatoes are the gnarled ugly ones.

The biggest value in the heirloom veggies, is that the seeds in them can be planted and you'll get EXACTLY the same kind. With non-heirloom veggies, they have been hybridized ('blended with another variety') and the seeds will not produce a like kind. In fact they often revert to something less desirable. The seeds are hybridized for a variety of reasons, but it's all messing with nature and the original.

So, if you find one you like, save the seeds, and produce your own !!

    Cute story about the heirlooms
I live in the south and was at the farmers mkt last weekend and it was the 1st time I had seen them and asked what they were, well when I was walking off the lady at the counter asked the man beside her "Go find Junior, see if he knows how to spell it" I spelled it for them cause I was scared if they found Junior he mught say "Well it's AIRLOOM YOU DUMB*** "

Flavor is definately a difference.. they are non-GMO, tampered with, etc. They are delish and ugly and oh so tasty. I got one called Ox Heart the other day and it was soooo fleshy and tastey and just the most beautiful deep red color. Then I got anoher one that was mainly yellow with pink stripes then I got a green one that the farmer told me was fully ripe and it was absolutely delish.. One of my favorites. Hmmm.. the green one had almost no acid to it at all. I've got an orange one and a pink one waiting for me at home right now... YUM! BTW, if you can find them at the farmers market they are much cheeper than in a store. I've seen them for $6+ a pound at the store and they are 1.50 at the farmers market, cheeper than most tomatos regular tomatos are.
