    Unhappy Please help my babies

I have three children ages 5yr, 3yr, and 1 1/2yr. I have been giving them fruit smoothies in the morning and fruit til noon for months now. Well, I have recently noticed that their breath smells a little sour-sweet. This does not seem normal.

Is there a web page that tells you different smells of breath and what they might mean (like there is for telling you different bowel movements and what they mean)??

If not, does anyone have any idea? My kids are not 100% raw. They are raw till noon, have a raw lunch, and then a salad and cooked dinner. I have a very strong feeling the smell has to do with the fact they are eating so much fruit.

    Thanks for ANY help!
    Blessings, Paula

    Paula,

As a diabetic, sweet breath is a sign and what I know is that sour breath can sometime be the sign of bronchial congestion. Are they moving their bowels sufficently? With eating the fruit are they having more mucous.
    here is a little information:

For dinner they have something vegetarian. I try to avoid grains, but it is usually some sort of soup or stew. Every once in a while I get a blended salad into them. And while the oldest will eat a salad everytime, the other two will pick at it and not get as much as I think they should.

They don't get as much sun as they should (very little right now that it is so cold).

I am worried about the diabeties now. Are there any other signs? How does one get diabetes?

As for BM, for the 3yr old they have gotten better (they used to be non-solidified mush that looked like vomit and didn't smell much better). The 5yr old hasn't had much change. And the 1yr old doesn't have bm like she used to. One every day or every other day, and it usually huge (like she dropped half her body weight) and smells so bad. All three of them have really bad gas (could it be detox?) that could knock your socks off. And I think the other two have smelly bm too.

Any other questions. I really want to get to the bottom of this. Also, I was told sweet breath amoung raw foodists meant health. The sour confused me though. NOW I am worried about diabeties.

Thanks for all the help (and questions). I would do anything for my children.

Hey Paula - they DO NOT have diabetes. Especially on their diet! You probably just need to get more solid stuff into them (based on the bm description)...try nuts and dates, you know dense stuff. And try to get them outside, even if you need to bundle them up. There's so much snow out here, they'd love to play it it, I'd bet.

They have dates (or raisins) and nuts (or avocado) everyday. They also eat a lot of whole food (after their smoothie, they get whole fruit and their lunch and dinner are whole - even the soups have a lot of chunks of veggies). I would think the fact that their bm are pretty solid is a goood sign they are getting enough solid food (the no consistancy was before changing to having more fruit).

They did go out and play in the snow the day after it snowed. I know I should get them out more. I will try.

You didn't mention how much water they are getting. Just wondering?

I have tried EVERYTHING to get my kids to drink water. They don't drink as much as they should (about 1 cup daily IF I am lucky). I even bought really cool and colorful water bottles, which worked for two days, and then they were forgotten about. I always have them filled with water for them to drink. It is just a matter of getting them to drink. Would more water help?

Yes, a lot more water. Have you tried to put in a little fresh lemom in the water and use straws?

Just a thought-you might look into food combining for raw...I just finished rereading The Sunfood Diet Success System by David Wolfe and I recall a section on b.m.'s, their smell etc and incorrect food combining.

Best wishes to you and your little ones...

I have been trying to do food combining (I cut out fats from smoothies, try not to mix fruits and veggies, eat melon alone, etc.). I will check out the book and see if I can figure something out. Thanks for the heads up about the book and the chapter! :)

I have not tried lemon in the water (as I know my kids would not drink it). But I might try getting some fun curly straws. Thanks!

Maybe try doing lemon & agave in their water for lemonade. Or juice apples & lemons for lemonade.

Diabetes in children is from birth, type II is diet, so I really do not think that children have diabetes because of the combo of smells. Have you consulted your doctor about this? Utilize the suggestions for water and also dilute fresh juice with 1/4 juice and 3/4 waters - they will drink it because it is sweet.

Please continue to let them be outside, and let them feel free. The fresh air will stimualte them considerably will also assit them with body cleansing. Now, how are your BM's -children are often reflective of their parents, are you still nursing your youngest child?

No longer nursing and have not been for a few months now. At least I made it til 18 months. :) My bm are the same as the children's (mentioned above). Although they were never like the middle child's (no form or consistency).

    Thanks for all the help.
