Cilantro tastes like soap!
I've often heard people say this. I just figured it tasted bad to some people. Until I made a salad with some from my garden! It starts out tasting like what I think cilantro should taste like but much, much stronger. But by the time I get to the end of the bite, there is a soapy taste in my mouth. Not good! I had some pico de gallo for lunch at a Mexican restaurant and theirs tasted fine. I grew it last year and it tasted fine. The only thing I can see with what I've grown is that it has started to go to seed. Could this be the cause? Ppppppyuck!

I don't know about going to seed, but cilantro is my favorite herb. I LOVE IT! I have never had this experience with the soap thing. I have even grown it and never had this, but I do not remember eating it after it going to seed, hmmm, hope there is someone on here that can answer this.
-
I hope they can answer it too. I've always loved it in the past. I can't say that I care for my green onions either. The nursery near me closed down and by the time I found another one, they were out of the onion sets that I usually plant. I got some gourmet ones that were purported to taste like garlic. I bought them because my daughter loves garlic. But I don't. At least I have other two different kinds. Those are good. Wish I had picked those instead. Tonight's salad wasn't a very pleasant experience for me!

i like cilantro a lot but i probably had an overdose - i have cut it down a bit. my hubby hates it, about the only thing he really cannot eat, to him it tastes like soap.
but: occasionally i had cilantro that had a strange aftertaste and i believe i just stored it in the fridge too long, i believe it should be really fresh to taste like good cilantro.

Every day is a new day - embrace it!

That is genetic when cilantro tastes like soap. Seriously. A small percentage of the population has that, it's somewhere around 1 in 600 people or 1 in 300, I don't remember the exact number.
It might help a bit if it's fresher, but in general, when people have that, that's just the way it is for them.

BTW, when it goes to seed, it's no longer yummy as a leaf, but let it go all the way to seed and save the seeds. Then dry them and store them whole, and when you want an amazingly fragrant spice, grind them to a powder in your coffee grinder (= coriander). The difference in flavor and fragrance is amazing compared with commercially available coriander powder.
You can also save some for planting next year.

I don't think you could get much fresher than this! I walked out my kitchen door with a pair of scissors, cut two springs, washed them, then chopped them into my salad.

But I've never had that happen before! I love Mexican food and eat a lot of cilantro. I did grow it last year, but otherwise I buy it at the store. I sure hope it doesn't taste like this to me from now on!

Could it be that Raw is changing your palate?
I find I can eat something I love, crave it then not want it anymore.
Then I fall in love and eat food I did not like before. Just a thought.

I doubt that, considering that I've always eaten a lot of raw food. And as I said, I had cilantro for lunch yesterday and it tasted fine. It's just that the stuff I grew doesn't taste good.

Love/Hate
You know, it seems to me that cilantro is a love/hate thing. People either love it.. or they hate it.
I love it. I can eat it by the bunch.
The genetic link sounds interesting. I'd like to read more about that.

You are right on my friend - the first time I tried cilantro I identified it with soap. Now I like it though - actually love it, and don't think of it as soap anymore.

My husband and I both find Cilantro tastes like Soap. We always ask at a restaurant if the dish has Cilantro in it.
Asparagus also make my, and my DH, pee smell very odd. Others say this doesn't happen to them. I find this one odd too !
