    Default Sprouting Mung Beans?

I'm on day three of sprouting mung beans. In Alissa's book she says to vigorously wash off the outer shell when they've sprouted. Does she mean when they first start to sprout or when they're completely done?

I haven't sprouted a whole heck of a lot (I actually tend to forget about them. . .) but I have some mung beans going right now and I don't try to get the hulls off until I'm ready to eat them--on about the 3rd or 4th day or so.

I don't know if that's "right" or what everyone else does, but I just thought it would damage the sprout if I did it beforehand so that's what I've always done. . .

    Good luck!

    Peace,

    Thanks Myssi!

I'm on the fourth day. I was expecting the big sprouts like I see in the grocery store, but mine are pretty small. They've still got 1/2 the shell on them, but it's soft and comes off really easy. How do I determine when they're done. This is actually my first attempt at sprouting.

    Christy,

I've attempted sprouting mungs a few times and was not able to get them to grow very long before they got slimy. (I live here on the EastCoast where it is very humid).

I know RP is an expert on this but she's off the boards until later this week so I am nt sure how long she gets her's to grow, although she and Dragggon get some massively sized produce from their efforts.

Mine usually take two or three days. I don't take the green outer shell off. If you look at pre-packaged sprouts in the grocery store (in the Asian section of the produce area), they have the green shells on them. I haven't reacted negatively, so ...

Thanks for the info., Rachel & EC!

I think mine have gone bad now. I probably could have eaten them raw even though they only had little sprouts. Now they're turning brown, so I think I waited too long.

PinkBow - I was going to use them in Alissa's Almost Tuna recipe.

    Default mung hulls

I made the tuna today and it was awesome! But I was annoyed at having to remove the hull from each and every sprout. Is there an easier way that I'm just not seeing?

    Thanks,
    Doreen
