Help - Some fruits make me feel sick!
Hello- I've been following a low fat, high fruit raw diet since January (Dr. Graham's 8-1-1). I eat mono fruit meals for breakfast and lunch and a salad for dinner. It seems like most fruits make me feel really sick when I eat them. The exception to this is bananas (I never feel sick when I eat them). This morning, for example, I did an hour Tae Bo workout and about an hour later tried to eat about a half of a pineapple. It was totally ripe. I hardly finished the pineapple and I was getting a really fast heart beat, sweaty, and faint. Does this happen to anyone else? Do you know why? What should I do (just eat bananas)? Thanks in advance for any help!

Well my first thought was the Tae Bo, I do it all the time and it's great but it's a tough work out and can make one feel a little depleted. Do you only feel this way when you eat right after working out or is this any time you eat fruits? If it's the former, then you might want to rest for a good hour or so before eating and just drink your fill of water to rehydrate and such. If it's the latter, then I'm stumped. I hope you figure it out.

It happens all of the time, not just after workouts. Thanks for trying to help though. I'm stumped as well!

Hello,
Are you taking any supplements or medications at night that might cause a nervous reaction in the morning? I know that I am allergic to all soy products, and I was trying so hard to avoid anything that had it in it. I just could not get it all out of me and eventually, I realized that one of the vitamins I was taking in the morning had an ingredient that was soy, but was not obvious to the average person because it was disguised as something else (another ingredient).
After removing this, everything was fine, and it was so much easier to just go on and eat things, not wondering if this might be the culprit behind my allergic reactions. Just a thought..
However, some people have allergic reactions to latex, and that is found in a wide verity of fruits so being allergic to some fruits is not entirely out of the question.

Nope, no medications or vitamins whatsoever! Thanks for trying to help though. I've never noticed an allergic reaction to fruits before either. Maybe I'm eating too fast? But I eat bananas just as quickly and don't get sick. Maybe I should just stick with the bananas?

Most fruit makes me sick too. I used to be able to eat it with no problems. But some years ago, I was at a buffet in Reno or Vegas (can't remember which), for breakfast. There wasn't much on the buffet that appealed to me. I had eaten a little bit but was still hungry, so I went back and got some melon. I ate a few bites of that and was soon doubled over in pain. It was so bad that I couldn't get up from my seat. Eventually the waiter asked us to leave because they needed the seat for someone else. I made it up to my room where I stayed for the rest of the day.
After that it seemed all fruit was a problem for me so I totally quit eating it. Then when I was pregnant, the dietician I saw insisted that I eat 5 servings of fruit a day. I tried, but the fruit never tasted good to me so I rarely ate over one bite of it and I limited myself to apples, pears, grapefruit and berries because these things didn't seem to make me sick.
After I had the baby I stopped eating fruit again. Then I eventually decided to add it back into my diet. Now I can eat 1/2 to a whole grapefruit at a time. I can eat a cup or two of strawberries. I can eat a small amount of raw apple or pear. I will thinly slice these and eat them on a green salad. Oddly, cooked apples and pears do not make me sick but raw ones will give me stomach pains unless I limit myself to a few bites. I've also added Wolfberries (goji), and will eat 1-2 T. at a time, especially during cold and flu season.
One person I know who is well versed in nutrition thinks that my problem is sorbitol. If I eat any foods containing this as a sweetener, I get the same sort of stomach pains. Many fruits are high in natural sorbitol, but this gets broken down when it is cooked.
So for now, I eat only those fruits that do not make me ill.

Hmmm... that's interesting. I'm going to research that now. Thank you!

I think that Dr. Graham talks about this on his cd set. I can't remember completely but I think that he said that a lot of times it has more to do with what you ate the night before. This is if you get sick eating it in the morning. I don't know if you are having this problem all day or not.
Anyways, he said that if you eat fat at night it takes so long to digest. Then when you eat fruit in the morning if the dinner before hasn't digested and is still there than it causes fermentation and can make you feel sick.
I don't know if this makes sense at all. HE says it much better than I do. Just a thought though to look at what you are eating as your last meal.

Had you had any fat yet in the day? It could be your blood sugar needs balancing with some fat. I eat some type of fat after or before I eat my fruit.

I haven't had any overt fat at all since January. I never eat nuts, seeds, or avocadoes. Last night I had green lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumber. . . that's it, no dressing or anything. Thanks for the help.

I have been following the 8/1/1 for awhile now, and you said this has been happening to you since January?? In the scheme of things it really hasn't been that long, maybe your body is still adjusting or maybe you're trying to make you body eat too much fruit too fast. It took me a few weeks just to build up to the SUPER large amounts I eat at my mono-meals. Also, pineapple may taste good, but it ALWAYS makes my toungue burn and I usually can't taste anything for a few hours afterwards. Is this only with pineapple?? If your body responds great to bananas keep eating them (I looooveee my bananas), but branch out and try other fruits as well. The greaaatest thing about our lifestyle is that what you are eating now won't be the same thing as what you are eating a few months from now and a few years from now...the seasons change and with that so do the fruits in season! I love that idea. Are you eating anything in season? Maybe change up your schedule and eat in the morning/ afternoon and workout during the day before dinner.... or maybe even work out later at night that way you're sure you are eating on an empty stomach the next morning. I eat two large meals...my first consisting of fruit and then I workout mid-day before a usual early dinner with fruit and a huge salad following. This has worked for me for almost a year :)
Hang in there. Your body is just talking to you right now and you are doing a great job in trying to figure it out... keep trying different things and the answers will come. But NO GIVING UP ALLOWED!! ;) I am planning on going to Graham's Health and Fitness week in sept so I will let you know how it goes!
