    Default sprouting questions

OK. I have Miss Cohen's book and DVD (highly recommended), I have read some threads about sprouting on here and I have done some research on the internet. I still have a few questions about sprouting. In Miss Cohen's book on pages 278-279, she has a chart for sprouting. She says that the only nuts that sprout are almonds. Well then how do you you know if you buy supposedly raw cashews or raw walnuts at our local organic store if they are truly raw if you don't see them sprout? In general, how do you know if you are eating truly raw sprouted nuts if they don't sprout. I'm confused. Also, Miss Cohen does not list oat groats in her sprouting chart. Do raw oat groats sprout and if not, how do you know if they are truly raw? In general, if I buy raw grains or beans, whatever, if they are truly raw, I should see them sprout, unless I mess up the sprouting process somehow - is this correct? Lastly, some of the best places to purchase nuts, grains, seeds, beans for sprouting? Thanks in advance for any help.

nuts you have to research their source. They might be raw but something like a walnut will not sprout or grow when you damage it taking it out of its shell. I cannot find almonds that i trust to be raw (many are pasteurized for risk of salmonella) so I don't buy them, but pecans, walnuts, etc., I have found truly raw ones. IMO the prospects of a raw cashew being raw are pretty minimal, they don't get a second roasting so are less roasted than non-"raw" ones, but high heat was very likely used to extricate them from their difficult shell, even for the so-called raw cashews. Some choose to eat them anyway, to each his own :) .

You can also grow nut trees and bushes if you want them really fresh and raw!

    no prob Scott.

I just noticed you also asked for sources. At Costco here in Canada, their pecans and walnuts are truly raw when I last checked (and relatively inexpensive), their "raw" almonds are all pasteurized. Costco's pine nuts are apparently raw, but their pine nuts are grown in China -- I don't buy theirs, I order organic pine nuts. Sprouting seeds and grains can be bought at most health food stores, or ordered. Some grains are raw at bulk stores too.

    Exurb,
Thanks for replying. At my local health foodstore, I "tested" the rawness of their supposedly raw grains, nuts, and seeds. Their raw grains would not sprout, but the flaxseed and sunflowers and almonds did sprout, so I would rather find a truly reliable and trustworthy source. It will all come together - love the challenge though.

    Thanks for your time.
