Default Could I have an avocado tree in a conteiner?

I do live in California, but I just have a balcony, and we all love avocados. Do you think some dwarf varieties would grow? I know I can even take a pit and sprout it, but his way I would need to wait 15 years for it to start fruiting! Have you ever tried growing fruit trees in a pot?

My sister had a beautiful avocado tree in a pot before she moved to England. She was in Northern California and she would bring it in the house during the very wet season.

I wonder if that would work for me in Minnesota. How big do they get? If it is something that could be potted, I could bring it in when it's cold. . . I spend SOOO much money on avocados!

Can you grow avocados from their pits? I live in CT but we have a little greenhouse that I could keep it in during the cold months or bring it inside if it's not too big. that would be SO awesome :) anyone think this would work?

Very good question. I live in Southern CA. I grew an avocado tree from a pit and had it for about 5 years. No fruit. Years later I found out you need to have from a grafted tree to have true variety and fruit. Also need to have another avocado tree in the vicinity to allow for pollination. Lived for awhile surrounded by a grove of true fuerte's--what a wonderful blessing having all the avo's I could want.

Would try to grow one anyway just for fun and the nice tree they can be. They do get quite large 30+ feet.
