Very good question. I live in Southern CA. I grew an avocado tree from a pit and had it for about 5 years. No fruit. Years later I found out you need to have from a grafted tree to have true variety and fruit. Also need to have another avocado tree in the vicinity to allow for pollination. Lived for awhile surrounded by a grove of true fuerte's--what a wonderful blessing having all the avo's I could want.
Would try to grow one anyway just for fun and the nice tree they can be. They do get quite large 30+ feet.
