Default How long should buckwheat tails be?

    Hi,
I've read that buckwheat sprouts quickly. I think I'm on day 3 for mine and their tails are about 3/4". Is this about right? Is there any general rule for knowing when your sprouts are ready? Is there a tail length which represents the optimal length for their nutritional value?
    Thanks!

    Revvell,
Since mine are longer than that, are they still okay to eat?

    aravis,

I would rinse them off. If they smell o.k., taste one. If it smells good and tastes good, you're good to go.

With buckwheat groats for pizza crusts, crackers, etc., I have evolved to sprout them fairly short, sometimes even just a soak the night before I need them, then a rinse or two and maybe some time elapses on the next day before I uncook with them, but I don't bother to leave them sprouting for days anymore. Gabriel Cousens suggests to not leave them for long, I think it was something like fermentation kicking in, his deal of minimizing mycotoxins.

Another buckwheat sprout I love that a lot of people don't seem to do, is to get some of the whole buckwheat with the dark brown hull still on, and grow it into buckwheat lettuce. It's easy to do outside, and they're delicious in raw recipes, salads, etc. :)
