Allison,
I completely understand about avoiding the sprouted grains. I'll probably do the same thing.
How did your son transition to raw? My son is extremely picky and eats like a bird. He has his favorites and that is what he eats. I'm not going to give him much choice as far as going raw is concerned but I'm also worried that he just won't eat/like any of the raw food.
I'm sure it'll all work out and that this is the right decision for the whole family, it'll just be a battle gettin him to eat. But then maybe he'll surprise me!
Take care,
Kirstyn

How old is your son? My son has been 85% raw his entire life (he's four), so it wasn't too hard for us to go 100%. When he was younger he was very picky about textures, though, so we blended his food. He still eats a blended salad every day. Of course, that's probably not the best thing to try first for your son. I think it might be challenging for you (and him!) to change, but just prepare yourself in advance. I would offer him lots of different things to try to find his favorites, then make his favorites a lot. Try smoothies, ice cream from the Champion, banana splits, all kinds of fruits, things like that. I've found that sometimes my son just wants something warm and savory, so that's when I will give him something from the dehydrator, like pesto stuffed mushrooms or dehydrated nut crackers. I think one of the keys to this working is that he drinks a lot of sunflower or almond milk (1 qt. water, 1/2 c. almonds, 3 T. honey all blended together, then strained). That helps keep the calories up.
How does the rest of your family feel about changing their diet? When are you going to start?
If I were you, I would get the book Raw Kids just to get some ideas.

Allison,
My son is 10 and his big gripe about food is that it doesn't "look good" or it "smells yucky". We were at Epcot in Oct./ Nov. for their Food and Wine Festival and I had to bribe him to get him to try anything and then he would say he liked the food but then would say, "I wouldn't like more anymore".
I think I'm going to have to do as you said and make a bunch of food that he may like, let him try them and make his his favorites.
As for the rest of the family, my mother and brother live with my kids and I, and my daughter is 13 and has Down Syndrome. My daughter just loves any food but would seem to prefer to eat fruits and veggies. My mother is all gung-ho to go raw and my brother says that he'll try it because I'm the one that does the grocery shopping and the cooking.
We're planning to work on obtaining all the requirements (Excalibur, juicer, etc.) over the next month and go 100% when my mother and I are off track in March. (We're both teachers in So. Cal, on a year-round school schedule and our track is off from Feb. 28 - Mar. 25.
This will give us time to hopefully detox while not having to worry about work and also give us time to really test out recipes from Alissa's book while were off as well.
I'm really excited about this and I know that it will benefit all of us. My mother, brother, daughter and I could all stand to lose some weight and we're all on medications for different things that I'm hoping raw will help with.
I will look into the Raw Kids book for sure.
Thanks so much and I'm sure I'll be posting more often as time goes by,
Kirstyn

Praise the Lord and all he has given us!
That's amazing. It's all here for the taking - the Lord has provided us with the most amazing nourishment in the most beautiful colors and shapes. Man could never create anything close.
Keep us posted on your little guy's development.
God Bless,

Allison, Thank you so much for sharing. I have an autistic cousin...and he is such a beautiful young man. It never occured to me to encourage my Aunt and Uncle to try raw foods. I will definitely do that now! Praise God...what a wonderful blessing. Thank You.
