    Default Raw Olive Taste Question

So I searched with the banana and found lot of stuff with olives but nothing that answered my question So I was wondering if there is a raw olive that taste anything similar to green salad olive slices at regular grocery stores? I am planning ahead to make a raw pizza when my nieces are here for 3 nights and 4 days and they eat nothing but junk, as well as my hubby....they will have pizza one night and I want to make a raw one.....I loved green olive slices on my cooked pizza and would love to have something similar. I was looking online but wouldn't have a clue which one might be similar.....thanks for your help!!

humm, well, I use to eat about 10 large green olives 4 times a day, when I was SAD, now I eat the kalamata olives from the deli, they are raw, and taste very similar to the green ones, I think it's the brine (salt and water) that gives them that flavor, as they all pretty much taste the same to me, some are a little sweeter, or hotter or spicier, but mostly they taste salty.

so, you might just try a few or when you order, put in a comment, and say you want the saltiest ones, or the ones that taste as close to the green olvies as you can get.

    can't hurt,

    good luck in your quest,

I love olives, I buy them in a huge black plastic barrel, they don't last too long though. LOl

Thanks RP - yeah on SAD I was an olive addict! At the prices I see for raw olives I wouldn't want to get the wrong kind. I did write to NFL and ask them which they sold tasted as close too.....but there is so much info on here I had to ask! Thanks again I will look into kalamata ones! Have a good night! ;)

Without a doubt the green manzilla ones they have are the closest. They are yummy. Sometimes they also have big green olives stuffed with garlic or lemon. They are both tasty as well. The kalamata ones (Raw Power) taste alot more tart. They aren't really similar to green ones.

As you can see I like my olives...

My favourite are the Morrocan - the taste is so wonderful - they are nicely spiced. Botilla and Raw Power I can leave (a little too tart) and Greek is great in dishes (although a little salty straight).

    Mmm..... olives!

I didn't no... but I did eat 4 Greek olives earlier, and yesterday floated a couple chopped up in some soup I made (Coriander, pear, garlic, ginger and lemon grass soup with choopped carrots and olives)!

I find the strong taste of olives is nice in green soups... I just float 3-4 chopped up and it's yummy! The water in the Morrocan olives is tasty enough to add to pate's too. I make a wicked cream sauce for pasta from cashews, lemon, olive water, morrocan olves and a touch of salt! Delicious!

    Cheers,

Sheryl, That Cream sauce sounds absolutly delish. I am an Olive FREAK as well. I have many different Raw varieties. I think my favs are the Italian..I get them shipped in from Miami. It's worth the shipping costs...thanks for sharing. would love the recipe of the sauce if you ever want to give it out.. :)

While we're on the subject of olives, anyone know which raw olives I can buy that taste like the Black Pitted Olives that come in the can in a grocery store?

All the ones I've seen seem like they would taste more like green olives and I'm a big black olive fan.

    Thanks!

    Default whole foods

I was at whole foods over the weekend and I can't pass their olive bar without drooling all over the place but I am not sure that any of them are raw. The guys behind the counter brought me some that were raw & unpasturized. I got a lb of them and ate half of them on the way home! They were so good. I am making a flax cracker spread today with minced olives, garlic, & onion.
The olives taste very similiar to regular green olives...they are called Luke-?? which is what he said but I am not positive that I have the right spelling since olives can be from so many different countries.

You could try a tapenade spread:
    INGREDIENTS
1 1/2 cups Kalamata or Gaeta olives, pitted
    3 tablespoons capers, drained
    2 garlic cloves, finely minced
1/4 cup minced fresh parsley leaves
    1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

In a food processor or mortar, combine the olives, capers, garlic, parsley, salt, and pepper. Slowly add the oil and pulse or work with the pestle into a coarse paste, retaining some bits of olive and caper for texture. Taste to adjust the seasonings. Stored tightly covered in the refrigerator, this will keep well for a week or two.

    Makes about 2 cups.

Thanks, sweetgoddess! Unfortunately all the raw black olives I'm finding are dried. I want big juicy black raw olives! Got any of those?
