Default Sprouts molding and smelling horrible

I seem to have a brown thumb when it comes to sprouting brocolli, alfalfa, mung, lentil. I tried an expensive sprouting system. They cam molding and smelled horrible. My hubby though the thing away when I was working one day.

Tried the mason gar with a mexh cover on it. Same thing. I do not know what I am doing wrong.

Ex. Brocolli sprouts -- just threw away

Soaked them for 6 hours, rinsed put in gar on window sill. Rinsed morning and night. Left on sill, started to sprout then stopped.

    Please help

PS Tried to find a post from past that would help. I am sure there is one could not weed through them for answer I needed.

    Thanks

My guess is that you are cooking the sprouts on the windowsill. Sprouts actually should be kept dark until the last day, and then just given enough light to green them up before eating... maybe on the kitchen counter instead of the window sill. Direct sunlight is way too intense for tender sprouts.

When you rinse and drain, turn the jar on its side and shake so the sprouts are in a thin layer and can get a lot of air. They need to stay damp, have air, be cool, and be dark. Got that?

And don't use too much seed to start. For green sprouts a tablespoon or 2 of seed in a quart jar is a good starting point.

See www.sproutpeople.com for lots of handy info.

I have not had this problem with my sprouts. I rinse mine more than twice daily though. Usually 3 or 4 times a day. I also make sure they are totally free of as much moisture as possible after I've rinsed them. I use sprouting containers that have a removeable insert that allows me to bang it around and shake it to get all of the water out. And lastly, you do not want to sprout your sprouts in the window. Yes, they will need a bit of direct sunlight after they have sprouted to get them to green up. But until they have sprouted you want to keep them out of the sun. And then when you do give them sun, a few hours is all they need.
