    Default Help With Beet Juice

Just made myself a glass of beet cucumber juice. Delicious. I could chug another whole glass. I read in the Juiceman Book (Jay Kordich) that one must be careful with beet juice - never more than 2-3 ounces at once and always mix it with milder juice like carrot or cucumber. He said heart palpitations could occur or paralyzed vocal cords. Did this ever happen to anyone - did anyone ever drink alot of beet/cuke juice?

Hmmmm I read in a number juice fasting sites that say no more than 1-2 oz a DAY.

    Default Beets me

I haven't experienced that myself, but here's a good online juice reference that says much the same:
    http://www.juicingbook.com/vegetables/beet/

Beets are generally advised to be used somewhat moderately because they are a powerful blood cleanser and could be overdone. Also the zing people get from them can partly be from their sugar content. Personally I just find the taste too strong to use in anything more than a supporting role... maybe a 1/4 of a medium sized beet in a 16 oz veggie juice.

I forgot to mention too......I have not experienced this myself when preparing BUT when the gals at the hfs put more than what I eyeball as 1 ounce, I can feel the sugar boost---I dont' like it. It really does need to be used in a base and not concentrated.

btw, Shiva daddy, I like that site! :)

I just read the article (it's Jay Koridich) you suggested - thank you. One must be careful with beet juice amounts. I'm almost afraid to drink it now.

I have lots of personal experience with beet juice, and while I can juice a whole beet (leaves and all) with carrots, kale, cucumber, an apple, etc... I have a story for you:

So I went to wild oats the other night to replace my dinner with juice b/c I didn't have time to eat... I told the woman juicing to put in carrots, spinach, celery, some garlic, and beets. Nonetheless, she asked me if I liked beets and I said yes. I couldn't see what she was doing (and I wasn't really paying attention), but she had put about 4 beets into my 64 oz container of juice!!!! 4 or more!! After I drank ALL my juice, it wasn't until 30 minutes later that I felt soooo sick... and I threw up almost all my juice in one motion. It was gross but I did make it to the bathroom in time.

So the point of my story is: 1 beet is great and worth your while..

4 or more... not so much!!!

But other than that I have had great results with beets and I still love them in my juice!

    Vandy,
Does wild oats have a juice bar and lots of raw stuff? I am from Nashville and am going to be visiting there in the next few weeks. Just wanted to find a store to buy my stuff.

    Default They sure do

    Cindy:

Wild Oats has a lot of raw food and a juice bar. They don't have any prepared raw food, but I have never had a problem with their produce. They have a salad bar that I absolutely love. I go there all the time and buy huge salads! Yum!

    cdepalmer~

The Wild Oats here is VERY suitable. They do have a juice bar where they make you raw fresh organic juices, but only vegetable juices. they don't juice fruit. Let me know when you are in town and maybe I will meet you there for a "Java" drink...

Sounds great! I love to come out to Green Hills. I use to love all the great restraunt's but not now. I am very surpised that Nashville does not have a raw restraunt. Oh well. I will be in town April 23- May 1st.

Wow, that's good to know about beet juice! I've been juicing them a lot lately. I've been using 1 small beet per 16 oz glass of carrot-apple juice. My 5 year old and I both really love it--but I had NO idea they could cause problems!!!

    Thanks for the info!

They only cause problems if you juice too much... but other than that the benefits are amazing, especially if you have liver problems. They are a very STRONG detoxifier, and that is why you should be cautious.

cdepalmer/cindy~ a friend told me they have just started a raw restaurant here, although I haven't been to it or heard anything, but maybe this is true!! Wouldn't that be awesome!!

I am just reading the new book Raw Truth recommended called Green for Life by Victoria Boutenko, ans it is amazing. She says juicing the whole beet together like that, tops and all, and also carrots the same way, is very good for you.

Her take on making green juice smoothies is awesome!

    Default Beets

My only experience with too much beet juice.... I drank a juice from a vegetarian restaurant that was heavy with beets. A little later I felt a little nauseous.. and about 30 minutes later had to go to the bathroom. It all came out the other end completely undigested. I guess my body decided it was too much and just pushed it through! Weird eh?
