Fencing Frenzy
I plan on taking Fencing during the Summer if my neck and back improves drastically. I ran into the Fencing instructor/owner at the grocery store and I was invited to watch the classes here in our city. I am so excited about this.
Anyone into fencing or have experience, I would love to hear about it. Any of your gear suggestions would be awesome too!
;)

I know all about fencing. I use to compete at a world class level for the US about 10 years ago. I use to live in Paris and that city was my homebase. Whenever I needed to go to another European city to compete, I would take a train from there. Oh what memories! I miss the competition and travelling. Now that I'm older I realize I had the time of my life when I was fencing.
Anyway fencing for the uninitaited is alot of fun -- but it takes alot of work to get good. Fencing will build your legs and your arms will get thick and toned from holding the blade. You need to go to a fencing club to appreciate the real thing - electrical fencing.
What city are you from and who is your instructor?

misslinda,
Hey, that's pretty cool. I've though it would be great to do it. I love watching all types of sword fighting shows: The last samurai, Pirates of the caribbean, the highliander, three musketers etc......
lowfreq,
How long does it take to master the basic?
What's the typical training routine?

My ds has been wanting to take fencing for a couple of years now. Northampton Fencing is only a few miles away, but they don't teach lessons til dc are 10 or so...my ds will have to wait another 2 years.

Yeah, I put up a picket and post fence one summer, and based on that, I suggest you hire a good fencing company to do it for you. It's hard work!

Hey Post..
It took me awhile to master the basics in fencing as each master has his/her own way of teaching the basics but in short, fencing requires alot of leg strength more than upper body. You will have tree trunks for legs! Also after some time you will develop strong forearms due to twisting and manuevering of the blade. Ah just talking about fencing -- I miss the sport.

How long did you fence Lowfreq? How long has it been since you last fenced?

Melinda,
The last time I fenced was ten years ago during the 1996 Olympic games. I was third-alternate for the US team. I probably fenced 12 years in my life. Alot of those years were spent traveling and competing -- oh to come think of it, they were the best times of my life. You brought back so much memories when I looked at the photos of the 2005 World Championships because I myself competed at the 1994 World Championships in Athens. I am 38 years old right now but I still look 23! Seriously I haven't aged very much and I plan to keep it that way with the raw food diet. Sometimes I day-dream at my desk about competing again but the only type of competition I do now is tennis. For the last 5 years tennis has been my sport. I love it but it is not as demanding as fencing-- methinks. The best way to get into fencing is through a university of some sort or a fencing club is there is one in your neighborhood. We have 3 here in nyc.

WOWSERS btw, do you have links to pics of you in Athens--if you don't mind the exposure?
this is such an honor to have you *bows to you*
