    Default durian

hey everyone, have a question. I just bought my first durian last night. I live in South Carolina and have been trying to find them. Earthfare had just gotten some in but they had been frozen. I was worried about it, but I bought two. One had a little crack at the bottom so I knew it was either bad or very ripe, I got that one for 1.00 (for the whole thing) the other .99lb
got home and the one with the crack was bad, the other didn't smell too bad
but it seemed to have more fluid than I expected probably from it being frozen. So anyway ate some, It was sweet but tasted almost like it smelled.
Couldn't eat too much of it though. I put it in the fridge last night and this am there was a couple of tablespoons of water in the bottom of the ziplock and so i drained it and will try again at lunch. Can I get more stories from anyone? Oh Atlanta Ga is about 2hrs away and sometimes they carry them but I am afraid they too will have been frozen. Do any of you know how much that compromises the taste or what?

    Hey Brenda,

I don't know about frozen durian, because I've only tried fresh ones a couple of times... both times they smelled horribly (gas, rotten eggs, stuff like that) and as for the taste... didn't like it either, but the others were just LOVING it, so it depends from person to person I guess...
The crack usually means it's ripe I thought... why did you say it was 'bad'? Was it the taste? The smell? The colour?... I'm no expert, but I do know there are a few posts on this board about durian (do a search) and otherwise try google, you'll find tons of info on the internet! :)

    Good luck!

Sorry I was so vague, the meat had grey green mold all over it, I have looked at a couple of durian websites and they said when it had the crack it was either very ripe or bad, so I took the chance for 1.00 who could blame me.
But when we cracked the other open it didn't smell as bad as expected and was cream colored, but I am not sure if I like it yet. My husband loved it, daughter (8) didn't. To each their own right? I didn't even think about checking past posts, thanks.

I like them, and I found the taste in some kinda like a garlic vanilla taste. Might not make sense, but it kinda grows on you.
