    Default Freezing wheatgrass

    Hi!
I searched, using the banana, and I guess it is frowned upon. But I hate my little manual juicer and I'm ready to give it up. I drink 2 oz. twice a day.

To do one big batch and freeze would be heaven. Would I still get any benefits??

Not from my understanding. From my understanding it "should" be drunk w/in about 15 minutes of juicing.

I often freeze my fruit juices, green juices, smoothies and wonderous concoctions, potions, and what-nots, just because I can't drink them all in one fell swoop, yet wish to have them available at a moment's notice.

Dehydrate to warm enough to drink, if it's too hard frozen.

I've not done wheat grass, as I don't juice it myself, I chew grass frequently, so I guess I'm masticating it all on my own.

but I see no reason why not. freezing dose remove some nutrients, and I would imagine you would be able to tell quick enough, by your feeling or energy level after consuming it.

I'd rather drink something that was frozen then to toss it out, or not have it, because I didn't choose to take the time to make it.

I say, drink 1/2, freeze 1/2 and try it, if it doens't work, you've lost a little, if it does work, then great.

    many blessings

Thanks RP and Revvell. I think I might try it. It's better than skipping it. I'll let you know if I feel a change.

RP - any advice on what to freeze it in? Too bad Ziploc doesn't make shot glasses! I need 2 oz. sized thingies. Maybe ziploc baggies and suck all the air out with a straw???

Hi, I freeze mine in the ice cube trays, pop them out when they are frozen, then put them in a ziplock so I can take out one at a time, or as many as I need. :)

Default Freezing wheatgrass, freezing wheatgrass juice

    Hi Nini,

Yes freezing does reduce the benefit of the wheatgrass, but not a lot, so it is a matter of balance. Having frozen wheatgrass juice to drink is way better than having no wheatgrass juice at all. As a matter of fact, one big commercial wheatgrass grower now ONLY sells frozen juice made under optimum conditions, and they have users who swear by their product. And Whole Foods now has frozen wheatgrass shots for sale in many of their stores. VERY convenient when traveling.

I've frozen wheatgrass juice myself when I had a bumper crop of wheatgrass and knew it was going to go bad before I'd get to it all. If you freeze it in ice cube trays it is probably best to use ones you aren't going to use again for ice, because they will be stained by the juice. And definitely put the cubes of frozen juice into a tightly closed container so they don't get freezer "burn" or pick up off odors.

Or, if you want to be really clever about it, get the throwaway ice cube bags many supermarkets and beverage supply stores now carry. It's basically like a big ziplock bag, but with lots of small pockets that you fill from the top, then you close and throw the whole thing in the freezer. After your juice freezes, just tear off one of the cubes and let it thaw in a glass for your wheatgrass shot.

But here's one more idea. Personally I found that messy and I didn't always want to go to all the trouble of juicing a whole flat at a time, etc. So now, when I have excess wheatgrass, I just cut it, throw it in a big ziplock bag, and freeze the whole thing. If the grass is dry when you freeze it you can just reach in, grab a portion, and put it straight into the juicer whenever you want. No biggie. Since my greens juicer (Omega 8001) is so easy to clean, I've settled on that as my preferred procedure. If you prefer you can warm the grass up slightly before juicing it, but I haven't found that to be necessary.

That's helpful. At the moment I have the opposite situation -- my drinking of the wheatgrass is outpacing its growth! Having only just started, I didn't know how much to grow, but I'm learning daily.
