Today I was looking at two coconuts I ate and I thought, "why couldn't I use these for planters?" So I'm going to drill a hole or two in the bottom, fill them with some pebbles & potting soil, and put parsley seeds in them.
Has anyone tried this?

What an awesome idea! They wouldn't ever go bad, would they? Or you could just use them until they go bad and then toss them.
Let us know how it works out. :)

Having been a farmer/gardener for well all my life and I'm 54 now I'll ofer my humble opinion. They can't go bad. They are natural organic material. They can rot but it shouldn't smell. The best that can happen is that the shell will slowly decompose and feed additional nutrients to the soil. The worst that can happen is that when that decomposition gets well on its way the shell will fall apart. But you have a unique planter long enough to probably grow a few herb crops.
Thanks meckleyj! That sounds great. What a wonderful idea RowanC! :) Now I just have to find a store in my area that will order them in for me. The guy at the Asian Market said they only carry them in Toronto, not here. Maybe if I let him know I'll buy a case at a time he will order them for me. Couldn't hurt to try. If not I'll try the grocery stores.

Anyhow I went with coconut BIG time! Coconut has many good uses! All of the coconut parts are useful. Over here in asia, the coconut shells are recycled, making them into lovely ladles, bowls, candle holders. I have never done anything like that personally but I sure would think making it into a planter would be a lovely thing to do. Making full use of what Mother Nature has provided us with. She will smile down at you for being creative and wonderful while saving the earth ;)
RawFoodMommie, Check out my baby young coconuts thread for some info on how to get them.
