Besides the veggies are you adding roots, garlic, maybe cayenne?
Helloi Fellow Juicers! I am pretty new to juicing and wanted to report that I also felt a slight burning sensation in the back of my throat and even on my tongue directly after juicing! The mix I have been using is, carrots, beets, ginger, celery, chard and parsley. Tonight I had the strongest burning sensation when the juice I concocted was mostly beet mixed in with a small amount of chard and carrot. I conclude that my burning sensation is mostly due to the raw properties of the beet and not an allergic reaction. Ironically, when I have had vegetable juice prepared for me fresh from a store or purchased an already made bottle of juice, I never felt this burning sensation. Also, I have been juicing every single day for a week which is the most I have ever juiced consecutively which again makes me feel it's not an allergic response.
I just found this thread because I had to do a web search for my own sore esophagus since just juicing. The only thing that was different about this recent batch of juice was the addition of rainbow chard. I had to use an entire bunch just to use it up before it wilted so the ratio to beets, carrots, ginger, garlic, and cilantro was heavy. Before I was finished drinking my glass of juice, I began to get a yucky feeling in the back of my throat. I took some silver afterword just in case it's as raw as it feels now to prevent infection. Any thoughts?
You can water down your juices to prevent that. I drink sprout and weed juices everyday, and in the beginning they didn't only burn my throat but they even burned my mouth! Very potent stuff, nothing else comes close. So in the beginning I watered them down until they were manageable, then eventually got used to them and now I can drink a good 20-30 oz of weed juice straight with no problems whatsoever.
Someone earlier said it might be related to oxalates in the juice. It could be something else, but this may simply be what it is also. I have had this happen with quite a few juices and I do notice that it is usually the ones that have more oxalic acid content in them. A few of the items a few of you mentioned are high in oxalates and these were spinach, chard, beets, beet greens, and especially parsley! If there is burning in the mouth as well then it might be something else...
Oxalic acid binds up calcium in vegetables as well as other foods and forms calcium oxalate which is a crystal type of compound. This has been theorized by many to possibly burn the throat as it goes down. I have read a lot of other blogs and forums where people mentioned the burning sensation in their throat and a lot of them also believed it was related to this. I do not know for sure if this is what you are experiencing, but it is something to consider.
Calcium oxalate is a major component of human kidney stones, but from all I have read in my opinion since we are taking it in with juice as a liquid it should get flushed from the body in our urine versus being stored in our kidneys. Another thought is to try to drink some water after you have this sensation and see what happens. Maybe it will help it all to go down quicker and find its way to where it needs to be.
