Cheating but Good Value lettuces
Today I noticed that Lidl had their "living lettuce" on half price. I bought 4 trays which I will get through quite quickly and because they are growing in trays I can take my time a bit.
I trim the leaves off with a knife leaving about an inch of stalk and then water well and plant out into the garden where I will get about 4-6 weeks worth of leaf regrowth.
When I first buy them, the leaves are soft like all commercially grown leaves that then spend time in a shop and often times a dark store room. Once they are in the ground the new leaves come through with a fabulous texture and the flavour improves.
I've only just cleared an area which has had some similar lettuce leaves which my mother gave me well over 2 months ago.
