Raw Vegan Rat
I sort of hate to post another thread here, especially since I have the mouse one going, but rats are slightly different topic.
So after doing a quick search I see this has been brought up before here - rats can live and do a great on a raw vegan diet. Ive seen a couple websites as well of people reporting their pet rats living to the ages of 4 and 5 without any health ailments when consuming this way, where as most rats that eat lab block or homemade mixes heavily based in cooked foods/grains and animal proteins live only 3 years if you're lucky. A rat forum I am on recently had a thread come up where someone was asking if a raw diet would work for their pet rats, I had replied and immediately people came in saying rats need animal proteins and lab blocks are the only way to get complete nutrition without deficiencies arising. Wouldn't rats after their own sort of detox period crave and know what their body needs? I mean you never see wild animals with deficiencies unless a major food group they were designed to eat is missing since they follow their instincts. Also, rats in the wild are scavengers and eat what they can find to survive, meat and rotting flesh matter being one of them. But in a perfect environment such as our houses and cages we keep them in, we could ideally provide them with everything their bodies need and that doesn't require the feeding of animal products.
I have one lone male rat left, he is about 2 years old and has been battling a weird eye infection that medicines a vet has prescribed have not been able to heal, as well as going blind and losing mobility. As of today I am starting him on a raw vegan diet, hopefully in time to reverse some of these problems and keep him around a bit longer. Any future ratties I get will be fed this way as well. If anyone else owns rats as pets and feeds them raw, please post in what you feed them diet wise, but from what I can gather their diet should be similar to us consisting of: lots and lots of dark leafy greens, fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts/seeds, and sprouts. I will be taking before photos of him, as well as after a month, two month, etc to show any improvements he will experience.
Other thoughts on this are welcome!
