Get human hair (go to any beauty/barber shop), sprinkle it on the ground and the deer will not step foot into your garden. It's always worked for me. The hair is clean too and free!!!
We use deer fencing and have had great success...
great. maybe I can pick up a roll of it at the hardware shop.
You might wanna do both. But I'm telling 'ya the deer fur/hair works. And it's free. Funny story. I went into an Asian beauty shop. They were speaking their native tongue and all turned to look at me and in my goof-i-ness I said, "Hi! Do you have any spare hair?"
Well, do I need to explain anymore of this story?
ok, the hair does sound like a good plan, but these deer are pretty friendly, so maybe I will try both methods. my front and back yard is like a deer party everyday. they are very cute! .. but they do gobble up everything green. I admire that! I can't blame them.
funny story; my neighbor bought a couple of small trees for her house and set them on her front porch for a few minutes and when she came back to get them all of the leaves were gone and the leaf thief was no where to be found.
The deer in my neighborhood are very tame. And they eat everything green in sight. To keep them away from my garden, I string up bars of Irish Spring soap at deer height. The deer can't stand the smell of the soap. It works beautifully - nothing has been eaten since I put the soap up.
Walk up to the deer and point your finger into his or her face and say, "If you don't stop eating my food, I will turn you into pate."
hahaha! right menat!
the cutest is the tiny spoted fawns following their mothers around the forest all day... soooo cute!
come to think of it we have our share of raccoons and other forest creatures, who all like to eat. guess I'll be learning more and more about organic pest control. thanks all.
Just wait till hunting season they will be gone.
I am into archery. Last year I had a huge organic garden. The deer ate so much stuff (don't read if you are against hunting) so I thought Ok I never killed anything with my bow but since I feed the deer all summer from my garden I would get me a deer for my brother.
In the summer I can walk right by the deer they don't care. I could mow around them nothing fazed them. Now come bow season not one deer in sight.
I'm not sure I could hurt them anyway.
Funny how we don't even realize our own "ick" factor til someone says something.... LOL. I read this and my whole body reacted to the idea of handling someone else's hair cuttings. Odd. and most likely unreasonable, I know....
I'm still creeped out, just thinking about it as I type this.... LOL. :o
Trust me, I'm not one to "foo foo" with ANYONE's hair, never was. As a kid I never liked to "do" my girlfriends' hair. BUT when it comes to the deer chewing up my plants and trees and stuff, I had no problem handling the cut hair. Maybe because it was cut and NOT on someone's head I could deal w/it.
Dunno...
yeah, I cringe at the thought of anyone harming an animal. had a scorpion get into my house and I captured it and took back to it's approprite home where it would be better off. I personally could not hurt a flea. I don't even kill spiders, though I may transport them to the outdoors.
